Ian Blackwell hopes a change of county, and a change of lifestyle, can reignite his chances of playing for England again.
Blackwell switched from Somerset to Durham during the winter and marked his debut for the County Champions with a century against the MCC at Lord's.
30-year-old Blackwell has played one Test and 34 one-day internationals for England, but has tumbled out of the reckoning in recent years.
The fitness of the left-handed all-rounder has been a major issue, similar to that of Samit Patel who was axed from the England one-day squad for his attitude towards fitness over the winter.
Blackwell has spoken to national selector Geoff Miller and been told of what he needs to do, both in terms of form and fitness, and he now is determined to carry out the changes necessary.
Lifestyle
Blackwell admits his natural instincts and lifestyle make it difficult, but he has already lost some weight and knows he needs to shape-up to stand a chance with England.
"For me it is a little bit more difficult with my lifestyle and the way I have been over the past few years," said Blackwell.
"But I have rectified that a little bit and I do look after myself a little bit better than I have done in the past.
"Perhaps I haven't given myself the chance of playing at the highest level through my fitness.
"I told him (Miller) I still want to play for England and he gave me the run-down of what the requirements were for international cricket and what was expected of all the players.
"I have a clear view of what he wants and obviously what I am trying to achieve as well.
"I am easily led - one of those guys who rarely turns down a drink or the chance to go out."
Changes
Blackwell was delighted with his debut century, and hopes to add more runs as the match progresses, and he believes his move to the North East could just help him back into the England fold.
"I am very pleased to get some runs in my first game and against a good bowling attack as well," said Blackwell. "This is a new challenge. I wanted to get my name back in lights and play for England again.
"Perhaps a change of county would test me and force me out of my comfort zone and help me progress with my cricket.
"As soon as I stop thinking I can play for England then I may as well retire. In my mind, if you're going to play the game you have to play at the highest level."
