Uncapped Theron to feature in World Twenty20
South Africa have named Juan Theron as the only uncapped player in a reduced 18-man squad for the ICC World Twenty20.
The Warriors fast bowler, who recently signed with Indian Premier League side Kings XI Punjab, landed a national contract for 2010 last month following a superb domestic season.
The 24-year-old was the leading wicket-taker in the 40-over competition, where his 21 wickets contributed to Warriors' title glory. He also featured as a key player during the local Twenty20 tournament, also won by his side.
Captain Graeme Smith has also been included in the squad, but faces a race to regain fitness after fracturing his finger whilst playing for the Rajasthan Royals and consequently being ruled out of the remainder of the IPL.
Recalls
Justin Kemp and Vernon Philander, who have both endured lengthy absences from the national team, have been handed recalls.
Kemp, who featured in the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL), returns to the squad after last playing for the Proteas in 2007, while Philander last appeared against England in 2008.
Meanwhile, the Proteas have also named their squads for the upcoming Test and one-day tours to the West Indies.
Corrie Van Zyl's side will compete in a three-match series, which are preceded by two 20-over matches and five one-day internationals.
An unchanged Test squad has been named from the one that drew 1-1 in India recently, with out-of-form pair JP Duminy and Ashwell Prince retained.
The limited-overs squad has undergone two changes, with Herschelle Gibbs making way for skipper Smith, who missed the three-match series in India, and Albie Morkel being replaced by Ryan McLaren.
Formidable
"Our aim at the moment is to build formidable squads both for the approaching World Twenty20 as well as for the World Cup next year," said Van Zyl.
"An important part of this is to achieve consistency on the field and an important contribution to that will be to be consistent in the selection process as well.
"This may involve changing the starting XI as we play against different opponents under differing conditions.
"The door is not closed on any individual as far as future selection is concerned, but we believe that the combinations we have are the best to suit our purposes at the moment."
