Second Test: Ishant Sharma inspires India to victory at Lord's

Ishant Sharma bowled India to a 95-run win over England, and a 1-0 series lead, on the final day of the second Test at Lord's.

Fast bowler Sharma bounced out five batsmen during his spell either side of lunch and finished with career-best figures of 7-74 as England were all out for 223 chasing a target of 319.

 The hosts lost their last six wickets for 50 runs - an implosion under-pressure England captain Alastair Cook in particular could ill afford - as the admirable earlier work of Joe Root (66) and Moeen Ali (39) was squandered.

Root and Moeen had raised England's hopes of pulling off their highest run chase at the ground with a century partnership.

Resuming on 105-4, the fifth-wicket duo extended their stand to 101 and remained together until the final delivery of the morning session when Moeen gloved to short-leg.

Ishant continued with the short-ball tactic after the break and it paid handsome dividends as Matt Prior (12), Ben Stokes (0), Root and Stuart Broad (8) were all caught in quick succession when taking it on.

Ravindra Jadeja ended the game with a direct hit to run out England's last man James Anderson, who will face a preliminary hearing on Tuesday - along with Jadeja - into their alleged altercation during the drawn series opener at Trent Bridge.

India's victory ended a 15-match, three-year winless streak overseas and is their second success in 17 attempts at Lord's, the first was back in 1986.

England have now gone 10 Tests without a win - a run that dates back to their victory in last summer's Ashes at Chester-le-Street - and the form of their senior players, in particular Cook and wicketkeeper Prior, is a continuing concern.

The five-match series continues in Southampton on Sunday.
