Adam Voges became the oldest player to score a Test hundred on debut as Australia took firm control of the first Test with West Indies on a gripping day two in Dominica.

The 35-year-old played the anchor role in his first Test knock, scoring an unbeaten 130 to help Australia to 318 all out, as home spinner Devendra Bishoo (6-80) removed many of his partners.

Voges' ton, secured during a 97-run stand with last man Josh Hazlewood (39), saw the tourists claim a first-innings lead of 170, which West Indies had reduced to 145 at stumps after stumbling to 25-2.

Voges, who began the day on 20, and Steven Smith (25) found runs hard to come by first thing, adding just 12 to Australia’s overnight 85-3 in 7.4 overs before Smith was stumped dancing down the wicket to Bishoo.

Bishoo then enticed Shane Watson (11) to drive loosely to slip, while he also castled Brad Haddin (8) with a vicious turner, one ball after Australia’s wicketkeeper had plonked him over his head for six.

Mitchell Johnson (20) put on 52 with Voges for the seventh wicket but was caught out top-edging a sweep against Bishoo, who then bowled Mitchell Starc (0) in the same over to nab his 50th Test scalp.

However, Voges found a useful ally in Nathan Lyon (22) – the pair combining for a 43-run partnership before the tailender was trapped lbw by Shannon Gabriel – and was then ushered through to his hundred by Hazlewood.

Voges, who was on 77 when Hazlewood strode to the crease, reached three figures off 187 balls, clipping Jason Holder for a single, to replace Zimbabwe’s David Houghton as the most senior man to notch a Test ton on debut.

The Perth-born player was given out lbw to Bishoo on 107 but umpire Aleem Dar was forced to overturn his decision on review with the tracker showing the ball would have turned past off stump.

Marlon Samuels bowled Hazlewood shortly after to conclude Australia’s innings, before Windies openers Shai Hope (2) and Kraigg Brathwaite (15) were sent packing by Johnson and Starc respectively as stumps approached.
