United States Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin has denied saying he would offer a guaranteed wild card place to Tiger Woods.
When asked whether the world number one would be one of his four wild card picks, Pavin had been reported as responding: "Of course I'm going to."
However, Pavin has now used his
Twitter page to claim he had been misquoted.
"I never said such a thing and will not say a thing until 09/07," he stated.
September 7 is the date when Pavin announces his picks for the October 1-3 match at Celtic Manor in Wales.
Disarray
This week's US PGA Championship is the last qualifying event for American hopefuls and Woods currently stands 10th overall - two places outside an automatic qualifying spot.
He needs to earn just over $120,000 to have a chance of climbing into the top eight but heads to Whistling Straits in disarray following an abject showing at last week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
Woods finished joint 78th out of 80 in Ohio and said afterwards that he would not want to represent his country playing so poorly.
However, on Tuesday he gave a straight "Yes" to a question about whether he would accept a wild card.
Woods missed the 2008 victory at Valhalla following knee surgery and his only win in five appearances was 1999 in Boston.
