Maiden PGA Tour victory for overnight leader

A day after setting a course record to vault to the top of the leaderboard, Scott Piercy was made to scrap before winning the Reno-Tahoe Open by a single stroke. Piercy competed the course in a blistering 61 on his third round, but found it tougher going on the final day as he eventually signed for a two-under par 70 to finish one shot clear of Pat Perez for his first PGA Tour victory. Piercy sank a seven-foot putt for par on the 18th to avoid a play-off. He had been leading by three on the 11th hole, but saw Perez put up birdies on the 12th and 13th while he bogeyed the 14th to drop into a tie. But Perez bogeyed the 17th and Piercy held his nerve with a two-putt to finish the job and book himself a spot for next week's PGA Championship. "Having to two-putt is not easy," Piercy said. "We had vacation plans next week but now I have to cancel. I'm so excited." Perez eventually finished with a 68, finishing one shot ahead of Steve Flesch and Blake Adams, who went around in 68 and 69 respectively. Jim Renner hit a 68 for sole possession of fifth place, while Steve Elkington and Nick O'Hern finished their final rounds in 71 to finish four shots back alongside Matt McQuillan and Ben Martin.
