Englishman climbs to 165 in the world after Madrid triumph

England's Lee Slattery has jumped over 150 places in the latest round of world rankings following his victory at the Madrid Masters over the weekend. The Southport-born golfer registered his first win on the European Tour at the 183rd time of asking as he closed out a one-stroke victory over Italy's Lorenzo Gagli at El Encin Golf Hotel on Sunday. However, Slattery endured a nervy finale, finding water and making a double-bogey on the last before finally being crowned champion. The 33-year-old lost his European Tour card in both 2007 and 2009, but this maiden triumph ensures his playing privileges for 2012 and sees him climb from 328th to 165th in the world rankings. American Bryce Molder is also on the rise after he too clinched a maiden Tour victory over the weekend. The 32-year-old outlasted Briny Baird in a marathon six-hole play-off in the Frys.com Open at CordeValle Golf Club to register his first PGA Tour success. Molder moves up 47 spots on the back of the triumph, from 155th to 108th. Tiger Woods also competed in the Fall series event in California and, after closing with three successive rounds of 68, finished in a tie for 30th. The result has not stopped the former world number one's slide down the rankings, although this week he has dropped only a single place to number 52 and is level on points with Peter Hanson in 51st.
