Spaniard Pablo Martin will be the main focus of attention when he returns to defend his Portuguese Open title at Estoril this week.
The 21-year-old from Malaga made history 12 months ago when he became the first amateur ever to win on the European Tour.
Martin had arrived at Oitavos as a student of Oklahoma State University where he represented the college on the golf course while studying for an economics degree off it.
But following his remarkable one-stroke victory over Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin, Martin opted to put his studies on hold and concentrate on tournament golf.
Shortly after turning professional he played in the US Open at Oakmont where he tied for 30th.
This week's Portuguese Open returns to Oitavos, a six-year-old layout designed by well-known American architect Arthur Hills.
The links-style venue is covered in sand dunes and is fairly exposed to the elements due to its close proximity to the coastline.
There are more than 40 bunkers dotted around the course while the greens are reasonably undulating.
So who are likely to be the main title challengers this week:
Fredrik Andersson Hed: The reliable Swede has posted top-25 finishes in each of his two previous visits to Oitavos.
Phillip Archer: This week's event represents an excellent chance for Archer to post a maiden European Tour victory.
Jose Manuel Lara: The Spaniard usually plays well on the Iberian Peninsula.
Charl Schwartzel: The South African has posted top-10 finishes in each of his last four visits to Portugal - 8th-4th-3rd-7th.
Graeme Storm: Was the leading European at the recent World Golf Championship event in Miami where he finished in a tie for sixth following a third round 63. Won his first Tour event last year and should be full of confidence when he arrives in Portugal.
Steve Webster: Traditionally plays his best golf in continental Europe and was winner of the Portugal Masters last autumn.
