Coach feels Welshman should get captain's job on home soil
Butch Harmon feels neither Colin Montgomerie or Jose Maria Olazabal should be awarded the 2010 Ryder Cup captaincy, insisting Ian Woosnam is the man to lead Europe at Celtic Manor.
The European Tour's tournament committee will meet in Dubai on Wednesday and announce their captain for the contest in Wales.
Montgomerie has emerged as the overwhelming favourite for the position with Olazabal understood to be his closest rival.
Woosnam and Sandy Lyle were the early frontrunners for the job, but it is thought a younger man is now favoured as they will be more in touch with the current crop of players.
However, Harmon is surprised by that theory and feels that Woosnam would be the ideal choice for skipper on home soil.
Asked which of Montgomerie or Olazabal would prove a better captain, Harmon told the
BBC: "I really don't think it should be either. Both can make the squad as players.
"I was surprised when it emerged that it probably wouldn't be Woosie as he'd be the perfect fit in Wales.
"Monty's and Olly's games are still good enough to make the team."
The renowned swing coach also went on to question just how much influence the captain has, adding: "In reality, how much can a captain do?
"A captain is in charge of 12 prima donnas and he has to put his ego aside and do what's best for the team.
"But ultimately, if the players don't play well they're not going to win."
