Open winner in line for backroom role at Ryder Cup

Colin Montgomerie has revealed he is considering making Paul Lawrie one of his assistants for the 2010 Ryder Cup. Having played alongside his fellow Scot at the event ten years ago, the European captain believes the 1999 Open winner could boost his backroom staff for next year's competition. "It is important that the people I have at Celtic Manor are still on the tour, and I also think it's important they have played in the Ryder Cup," he said in the Daily Express. "I appointed the two captains for next month's Seve Trophy - Paul McGinley for the Great Britain and Ireland team, and Thomas Bjorn for the continental squad. "You can put two and two together from that in terms of the Ryder Cup, but I envisage having at least four assistants. "Paul is certainly one of the candidates with Jose Maria Olazabal."
