Home triumph on the cards - poll

Skysports.com readers have thrust their support behind Europe to live up to their 8/13 favourites tag and win the Ryder Cup.

Last Updated: 01/10/10 10:55am

Skysports.com readers have thrust their support behind Europe to live up to their 8/13 favourites tag with Sky Bet and triumph in this year's Ryder Cup.

Colin Montgomerie's men have received an overwhelming 80 percent of readers' votes to win on home turf as the USA continue to be written off in their pursuit of back-to-back victories.

The 15 percent of readers expecting USA to win in Wales at 7/4 might believe the American-style Celtic Manor course to play into the hands of Corey Pavin's big-hitting side.

However, forecasted difficult conditions in Newport over the weekend are set to suit the European team which already have form on their side.

While Jim Furyk has come down to 7/1 to be USA's top points scorer after claiming £6.4million by becoming the overall FedEx Cup champion with his victory in the Tour Championship last week, USA's top names arrived in Wales far short of their best.

Tiger Woods' troubles are well documented on and off the course and showed little sign of being behind him as he failed to qualify for the Tour Championship last week, but the 34-year-old remains joint favourite to be top overall points scorer at 10/1.

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson, 14/1 to top the points-scoring charts, froze in the face of knocking Woods off the number one spot and his poor Ryder Cup record away from home soil hardly suggests Wales is the place for the left-hander to return to the top of his game.

In contrast, 2010 has been a promising year for European golf with Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer triumphing in majors and the pair tee-off at 6/1 and 11/2 respectively to be Europe's top points scorers.

The PGA Tour was a happy hunting ground for Europe's finest with McDowell, Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter claiming wins prior to getting the nod from Monty.

The online betting company are offering 11/2 on either of the Molinari brothers, Edoardo and Francesco, to be top points scorer following their fine form on the European Tour, while it is virtually impossible to find a weak link in Monty's line-up.

Unsurprisingly, a meagre three percent of readers are expecting a tie, which is available at 12/1, something that has only previously happened twice in the competition's 83-year history.

Meanwhile, following the announcement of Friday's opening fourball matches Sky Bet have announced their match prices:

Mickelson/D Johnson 11/8 v Westwood/Kaymer 11/10, Tie 9/2

Cink/Kuchar 2/1 v McIlroy/McDowell 8/11, Tie 5/1

Woods/Stricker 11/10 v Poulter/Fisher 7/4, Tie 11/4
