2014 Ryder Cup: Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed out first for the USA in singles matches

Patrick Reed (L) and Jordan Spieth: First two players out for USA in singles

USA Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson has sent in-form rookies Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed out first in Sunday’s singles matches at Gleneagles.

Watson’s team are attempting to overturn a 10-6 deficit against Europe, who need just four points from the 12 matches to retain the trophy.

A fast start is therefore crucial for the United States and Watson has tasked his young duo, who have won 2½ points from a possible 3 when paired together in the fourballs and foursomes, with getting some red on the scoreboard.

Spieth will face Graeme McDowell while Reed will play Henrik Stenson. Both European players took maximum points from their fourballs and foursomes matches over the first two days of the event.

Third out on the course is a mouth-watering clash between world No 1 Rory McIlory and American star Rickie Fowler, while Justin Rose - so far the highest point-scorer from either line-up - takes on Hunter Mahan.

Scottish home favourite Stephen Gallacher, who has not featured since a heavy defeat in the opening fourballs on Friday, takes on Phil Mickelson, who also sat out all of the action on Saturday.

Other notable matches see major winners Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson go head-to-head, Sergio Garcia play Jim Furyk and Ian Poulter go up against Webb Simpson.

Singles matches (Tee times BST):

11:36: Graeme McDowell v Jordan Spieth

11:48: Henrik Stenson v Patrick Reed

12:00: Rory McIlroy v Rickie Fowler

12:12: Justin Rose v Hunter Mahan

12:24: Stephen Gallacher v Phil Mickelson

12:36: Martin Kaymer v Bubba Watson

12:48: Thomas Bjorn v Matt Kuchar

13:00: Sergio Garcia v Jim Furyk

13:12: Ian Poulter v Webb Simpson

13:24: Jamie Donaldson v Keegan Bradley

13:36: Lee Westwood v Jimmy Walker

13:48: Victor Dubuisson v Zach Johnson
