England vs Australia

Last Updated: July 19, 2015 4:54pm

  •

    AUSTRALIA WIN BY 405 RUNS

A mauling, a thumping, a shellacking - you decide the word. The story is that England have been walloped and pegged back to 1-1 in the Ashes series. Roll on, Edgbaston. Join us in a week and a bit!

  •

WICKET! Anderson b Hazlewood 0 - Eng 103 all out

Anderson is castled by Hazlewood to end proceedings. What a comeback for Australia, what a horrific defeat for England. Done and dusted in 37 overs.

  •

    Over 36 - England 102-9 (Wood 1, Anderson 0)

The England balcony looks incredibly sullen, a far cry from last Saturday in Cardiff. Wood tucks a ball from Lyon off his hip for a single before Anderson watches a sharp turner fizz past his bat last up.

  •

    Over 35 - England 101-9 (Wood 0, Anderson 0)

A big cheer erupts around Lord's as Anderson pushes Hazlewood to mid-off. Australia will be cheering in a minute, I suspect.

  • WICKET! Root b Hazlewood 17 - Eng 101-9

Root is cleaned up by a length ball from Hazlewood. Start the car, as Bumble would say...

  •

    Over 34 - England 101-8 (Root 17, Wood 0)

Broad shows some guile with a deft sweep for four but then fails to connect with a cut shot. A mammoth six follows but the excitable Lyon has the last laugh...

  • WICKET! Broad c Voges b Lyon 25 - Eng 101-8

Broad missed Voges earlier, not this time. Toe-ending to cover after an entertaining cameo.

  •

    Over 33 - England 91-7 (Root 17, Broad 15)

Johnson is too wide to Root to start and no shot is played. A short, straight delivery is then dispatched routinely to the fence by Root courtesy of a pull. Johnson flip-flops between straight and wide from that point on.

  •

    Over 32 - England 87-7 (Root 13, Broad 15)

England's blonde bombshells continue to play their shots, Broad plinking just short of cover fielder Voges off the last ball of Lyon's seventh over.

  •

    Over 31 - England 82-7 (Root 12, Broad 11)

The runs are flowing! Broad times one nicely through mid-on for three before hopping around and edging a searing nut over the keeper for four. A flash over the slips yields another boundary. Such fun.

  •

    Over 30 - England 70-7 (Root 11, Broad 0)

Root picks up a boundary off Lyon. Something mild, very mild, for England to cheer.

  •

    Over 29 - England 64-7 (Root 5, Broad 0)

So, two bite the dust in that over. Root is brilliant but there's not much he can do here.

  • WICKET! Buttler c Nevill b Johnson 11 - Eng 64-6

They're dropping like flies. Buttler pokes at the first ball after tea and hands Nevill his fourth catch of the innings. Who needs Brad Haddin? England need a miracle.

  • Tea - England 64-5, need another 445 runs to win

Starting to think England might not get these. Dreadful wafts outside off stump did for Lyth, Cook and Ballance, Bell batted himself to a standstill, and then Stokes provided the coup de grace with a gloriously ludicrous run out. Root is still there, but has looked nothing like the free-flowing run machine from Cardiff. Remarkable stuff.

  •

    Over 28 - England 64-5 (Root 5, Buttler 11)

Horrific session for England. Their worst in a horrific Test match for them. They've thrown away five wickets in various shambolic ways on an entirely blameless pitch. Australia will feel they should wrap this up tonight now.

  •

    Over 27 - England 60-5 (Root 4, Buttler 8)

First decent piece of timing pretty much since lunch sees Buttler ping one over midwicket for four. Gets another less convincing boundary off a thick outside edge later in the over.

  • WICKET! Stokes run out (Johnson) 0 - Eng 52-5

Ridiculous error from Stokes. Root calls him through for a single. Johnson throws down the stumps and Stokes, seemingly worried about getting hit by the ball, fails to run his bat in and is run out. His foot and bat are both over the line, but neither are grounded.

  •

    Over 26 - England 52-4 (Root 4, Stokes 0)

Ben Stokes the new batsman for England. Lyon immediately rips one past the outside edge. Beats Nevill and the dive from slip as well to bring four byes and take England past 50.

  • WICKET! Bell c sub (S Marsh) b Lyon 11 - Eng 48-4

Bell prodding and poking looking only to survive. Can't do it. Gets a thick inside edge on to his pad to give Shaun Marsh an easy catch at short-leg. Turn and bounce there from Lyon, who's in the middle of a great spell here.

  •

    Over 25 - England 48-3 (Bell 11, Root 4)

Marsh back with another maiden. Root tries to hook a bouncer from a good yard outside off stump. Doesn't make contact, which is probably the best thing that could happen for him there.

  •

    Over 24 - England 48-3 (Bell 11, Root 4)

England utterly becalmed now, with the partnership worth six runs in 47 balls as Lyon completes another maiden.

  •

    Over 23 - England 48-3 (Bell 11, Root 4)

Perfect short ball from Johnson. Root has no option but to try and defend the ball in front of his face using the bat handle. Ball loops up off it but lands safely in front of short-leg, who is perhaps guilty of being slightly on his heels there.

  •

    Over 22 - England 48-3 (Bell 11, Root 4)

Don't think Bell and Root have middled one between them yet. Bell bottom-edges a cut shot in another over of probing from Lyon.

  •

    Over 21 - England 47-3 (Bell 11, Root 3)

Root punches off the back foot for a single before Bell is dropped at first slip. Nevill starts to go down the legside, wrongfooting himself out of any chance for the catch. Voges dives to his left from first slip and gets his hand to the ball, but can't hold on. Bell squared up completely by that one from Johnson pushed across him.

  •

    Over 20 - England 44-3 (Bell 10, Root 1)

Maiden over to start Nathan Lyon's spell. Root does get a leg-bye to take England one run closer to their target. Bell then leaves one that spins back and just misses the off stump. Good judgement. Just about.

  •

    Over 19 - England 43-3 (Bell 10, Root 1)

Root just about gets something on Johnson's short ball. Gets himself a single and off the mark. Not convincing, though.

  •

    Over 18 - England 42-3 (Bell 10, Root 0)

Bell plays out a maiden over from Starc. England in danger of falling behind the required run rate for victory here.

  •

    Over 17 - England 42-3 (Bell 10, Root 0)

Even Marsh looking unplayable here. Bouncer to end the over, and Root gets a top edge that clangs into the the helmet. Great advert for those new Masuri helmets, with a combination of peak and grille doing the job and keeping the ball out.

  • WICKET! Ballance c Nevill b Marsh 14

Mitchell Marsh's golden arm strikes straight after drinks as Ballance fences tamely outside off stump and gets a healthy edge through to Nevill.

  •

    Over 16 - England 42-2 (Ballance 14, Bell 10)

Starc squares Ballance up with another cracker - the batsman ended up with both shoulders facing down the wicket, squared up as he just avoided getting an edge through to Nevill. The over finishes with a single out to deep square leg - yep, that's right, Australia currently have a DEEP SQUARE LEG. Clearly they remain a little concerned that England can get another 467 to win. For now, though, it's time for drinks.

  •

    Over 15 - England 41-2 (Ballance 13, Bell 10)

Johnson through four overs now - perhaps two more in this spell, maybe? Australia still have Lyon's offies and Mitchell Marsh's golden arm to call upon, though captain Clarke is absolutely right to keep his three frontline seamers going while the ball is still relatively new

  •

    Over 14 - England 39-2 (Ballance 12, Bell 9)

Change of ends for Starc - Lyon is going to have to wait a little longer to have a bowl in this innings. The left-armer beats Ballance with a beauty outside the batsman's off stump, but the England player responds by driving the very next delivery away through the covers for four.

  •

    Over 13 - England 35-2 (Ballance 8, Bell 9)

Clarke shuffles around his field as Bell gropes away at Johnson outside off stump, twice drawing into play at deliveries that are never endangering his stumps. The leg gully means he has to be prepared for the short one as well. Just in case you're an England fan feeling extremely optimistic - they only need another 474 for victory now.

  •

    Over 12 - England 34-2 (Ballance 7, Bell 9)

Hazlewood now through six overs either side of lunch at a cost of 19 runs. There's a half-hearted shout for a catch down leg when Bell tries to pull away a rare bad delivery from the seamer, but there was no nick. Shouldn't be too long before we see a little bit of spin introduced into the attack. Nathan Lyon was warming up a little earlier, though that may have been in hope rather than expectation.

  •

    Over 11 - England 30-2 (Ballance 7, Bell 5)

Super stuff from Johnson - hostile, accurate and full of menace throughout the over to Ballance. Chris Rogers spotted on Australia's balcony - a good sign after he had to retire due to dizziness when batting this morning

  •

    Over 10 - England 30/2 (Ballance 7, Bell 5)

As if batting against a pumped-up Australia attack wasn't hard enough right now, there's another example of uneven bounce when Ballance toe-ends in defence to Hazlewood. The tourists can smell blood here.

  •

    Over 9 - England 27-2 (Ballance 5, Bell 4)

Ian Bell gets off the mark first ball, though it could well have seen his downfall. Johnson gets one to swing back in late and, looking to leave, the new batsman rather hangs his bat in defence. The ball takes the inside edge and disappears past his stumps and away to the fence at fine leg. Johnson finishes an outstanding over with a brute of a short ball that Bell somehow fends down.

  • WICKET! Cook c Nevill b Johnson 11

Mitchell Johnson strikes in his opening over! Having left well outside his off stick, Cook gets lulled into playing a back-foot cut at something well wide of his stumps. All he ends up doing, though, is feathering a nick through to wicketkeeper Nevill. England's anchor is out, and this innings is in danger of sinking fast.

  •

    Over 8 - England 23-1 (Cook 11, Ballance 5)

Hazlewood sends down an excellent over to Cook, testing his stumps as he brings everything back in to the home skipper. The fifth ball of the over nearly squeezes through as it keeps a little low, only for the batsman to drop down on it at the last second. Ballance takes note, waits for the late movement and whips the final delivery through square leg for four

  •

    Over 7 - England 18-1 (Cook 10, Ballance 1)

Ballance gets off the mark in this innings with a single clipped off his toes, then watches on as Cook drives square of the wicket when Starc is both too full and too wide. Classy shot for four from the England skipper - it was low risk for a high reward. A scampered single off the last means Cook keeps the strike.

  •

    Over 6 - England 12/1 (Cook 5, Ballance 0)

Australia appeal not once but twice on the same delivery to Cook. They ask first about lbw, but it's way too high. Then, in a blink of an eye, politely question whether there was any bat involved before the ball ballooned up to short leg. There wasn't - England's captain survives on both fronts, and it's a maiden from Hazlewood.

  •

    Over 5 - England 12-1 (Cook 5, Ballance 0)

Great start to the session for Australia, but another disappointing knock for Lyth at Lord's - his scores at the venue in Test cricket now read as such: 7, 12, 0 and now 7 today. Too often in his short career at the highest level, he has been caught behind defending off the back foot

  • WICKET! Lyth c Nevill b Starc 7 - England 12-1

Lyth doesn't last too long after lunch, falling to Mitchell Starc for the second time in the match. It's a good ball in truth, rising off a length and moving away slightly, taking the outside edge as the left-hander looked to defend on the back foot

  •

    Over 4 - England 12/0 (Lyth 7, Cook 5)

Hazlewood with the opening over of the afternoon session. He pays the price for getting a little too straight to Lyth, allowing the Yorkshireman to whip him away through mid-wicket for his first boundary of the Test. When the bowler pitches it a fraction wider, the same batsman is able to push a single into a huge gap in the covers

  • Sky Bet

Australia 2/9 with Sky Bet to win this game, with the draw 11/2 and a world-record sensation from England at 12/1. Alastair Cook is 10/3 to score the rearguard century he almost produced first time around, while Joe Root is 3/1 to hit back from his first-innings disappointment with a three-figure score as England battle against the odds. • Lunch - England 7-0, need 502 more runs to win

Good from Clarke to get England in before lunch, but Starc and Hazlewood didn't quite get it right. Might just have been guilty of striving too much for the quick breakthrough. Predictable carnage in the first part of the morning with Warner, Smith, Clarke and Marsh all enjoying themselves. Only Rogers didn't, forced off the field after just two overs with dizziness. He has had concussion recently and was hit hard on the helmet by James Anderson early on day two, so concerns are inevitable. The latest from Cricket Australia is that he's resting. Hasn't left the ground to go to hospital or anything.

  •

    Over 3 - England 7-0 (Lyth 2, Cook 5)

Cook able to watch the last three balls of the over go through to Nevill. So far, so good for England, who manage not to lose any wickets in that 10-minute pre-lunch examination.

  •

    Over 2 - England 7-0 (Lyth 2, Cook 5)

Loose first over from Hazlewood, perhaps striving too hard. Pushes one down the legside, smartly gathered by Nevill, and then throws one way outside the off stump. Couple of better deliveries to end the over, but both are defended into the offside for singles, first by Lyth and then by Cook. England still above the required rate of 3.35 runs per over. Nervy times now for Australia.

  •

    Over 1 - England 5-0 (Lyth 1, Cook 4)

England up with the rate as Lyth gets off the pair with a single on the legside and Cook clips his first ball away to the square-leg boundary. Big lbw shout next up as Starc squares Cook up, but there's a bit of bat involved. Dharmasena says not out, and there's no review.

  •

    Over 49 - Australia 254-2d (Clarke 32, Marsh 27)

Marsh launches Moeen for successive sixes as the lead roars past 500. And Clarke does decide to declare and have 10 minutes at England before lunch.

  •

    Over 48 - Australia 239-2 (Clarke 30, Marsh 14)

Eight runs from Root's over, the lead now 493. Some batting gloves come out at the end of the over, along with - one assumes - a message of some sort.

  •

    Over 47 - Australia 231-2 (Clarke 28, Marsh 8)

Mitchell Johnson is sat on the balcony in his training gear. Doesn't look like he's about to go anywhere, so don't think England will be batting before lunch.

  •

    Over 46 - Australia 227-2 (Clarke 25, Marsh 7)

Lead up to 481 as Clarke and Marsh knock Root around for easy singles. Two overs at England before lunch? That would be the funky option.

  •

    Over 45 - Australia 221-2 (Clarke 22, Marsh 4)

Just two singles from Moeen's over, which has to count as a victory for England at this stage.

  •

    Over 44 - Australia 219-2 (Clarke 21, Marsh 3)

The runs still flowing, Clarke cover-driving a gentle, floaty Root half-volley to the fence in an over that brings nine runs in total. The lead is now 473.

  •

    Over 43 - Australia 210-2 (Clarke 15, Marsh 0)

Mitchell Marsh promoted above Adam Voges in the order. Might have happened anyway in the circumstances, but Voges also spent most of the England innings off the field injured after getting whacked by a Ben Stokes sweep at short-leg.

  •

    WICKET! Smith b Moeen Ali 58 - Aus 210-2

Smith's fun is over, after helping himself to a quickfire 58 he aims a big mow at Mo, and has his off stump knocked back.

  •

    Over 42 - Australia 208-1 (Smith 57, Clarke 14)

Broad and Smith continue their entertaining private game to see how wide of off stump Broad can bowl yet still get hit through the legside. A classic hack brings Smith two runs before a disappointingly elegant square-drive through point brings Smith four runs, but a clear moral victory for the bowler. Smith back on form next ball, though, wandering way outside off stump and inside-edging the ball down to the fine-leg fence to bring up 50. Shot of the match. Repeats the trick next ball, but off the middle of the bat this time. Smith keeps the strike with a single from the last ball of the over. Smith playing Test cricket on Easy mode in this game. Outrageous stuff.

  •

    Over 41 - Australia 193-1 (Smith 42, Clarke 14)

Shot from Clarke, down the track to Moeen and hitting inside-out over extra-cover for a one-bounce four. Six runs from the over, and Australia well on track for a 500-run lead by lunch.

  •

    Over 40 - Australia 187-1 (Smith 41, Clarke 9)

Broad looking to continue his psychological hold over Clarke. It's all England have to cling to. Almost gets him as well, spearing a yorker towards middle stump and almost getting it under the Australia skipper. Squeezes down to fine-leg off the toe of the bat. Singles off the first five balls of the over, the most astonishing of which comes with Smith, wise to England's plan to bowl way outside his off stump, just walking a yard across his crease and still working the ball into the legside. Broad comes round the wicket to further accentuate the angle to Smith. Again he walks nonchalantly across his crease and gets the ball into the legside, for two this time.

  •

    Over 39 - Australia 180-1 (Smith 37, Clarke 6)

A pair of delightful boundaries - one for Smith, one for Clarke - means Australia enter the drinks break with a lead of 434 runs.

  •

    Over 38 - Australia 171-1 (Smith 33, Clarke 1)

Boom! Smith wallops a Broad cutter up and over extra cover for four. Getting a little giddy, Smith goes large again but makes no connection. The latest on Rogers is that he is resting at Lord's but currently unable to continue his innings.

  •

    Over 37 - Australia 167-1 (Smith 29, Clarke 1)

Clarke, a noted player of spin, is next in. He'll be eager for a good score after a fallow time in this series so far.

  • WICKET! Warner c Cook b Moeen 83 - Aus 165-1

No Lord's ton for Warner, looking to motor he picks out short-extra-cover, the captain getting his hands above his head to pouch.

  •

    Over 36 - Australia 164-0 (Warner 83, Smith 27)

Broad, who is two scalps away from leapfrogging Derek Underwood (297) and moving into fifth spot on England's list of leading Test wicket takers, is on. If anyone can make a breakthrough it's probably him, he's been excellent in the series thus far. Smith shows all his skill, though, strolling past off stump and playing a standing sweep - AB de Villiers style - into leg. Majestic. The fifty stand is up off 47 balls.

  •

    Over 35 - Australia 158-0 (Warner 80, Smith 24)

Australia are playing their shots now and, as tends to happen when you are bang on top, getting the luck. Smith's swish flashes away through the slip cordon for four.

  •

    Over 34 - Australia 151-0 (Warner 78, Smith 19)

Warner rocks back to smoke Wood through the covers and take Australia's lead to 400. That reaches 405 by the end of the over with the imperious Smith lofting the Ashington-born seamer over midwicket.

  •

    Over 33 - Australia 142-0 (Warner 73, Smith 15)

Cook turns to Moeen and the spinner almost does the trick. Smith looking to biff him over extra cover, but only succeeding in toe-ending just past the stumps. Nine from the over, though.

  •

    Over 32 - Australia 133-0 (Warner 67, Smith 12)

Wood earns Mikey Holding's respect by deciding his own field. The Durham man has been better than Anderson in the early stages of day four and gets through another decent over here. It could have been more than decent had Joe Root clutched onto a Warner pull, the Yorkshireman getting only a fingernail on the stroke at short midwicket.

  •

    Over 31 - Australia 130-0 (Warner 65, Smith 11)

Anderson is trying to avoid ending a Lord's Test wicketless, a fate that has never befallen him on his 17 previous visits in an England jersey. Bowling a driveable ball to Smith is not the way to do it, the seamer crunched to the ropes with aplomb. Australia lead by 384.

  •

    Over 30 - Australia 126-0 (Warner 65, Smith 7)

Wood bowls a tad too straight and is nurdled past fine leg and to the fence. Decent over otherwise.

  •

    Over 28 - Australia 122-0 (Warner 61, Smith 7)

Australia are flying high in this Test, so perhaps that has caused Rogers' dizziness. The veteran opener, who was hit on the head by an Anderson ball on day two, sits on the turf, looking slightly glazed. He decides to take a breather one run shy of reaching fifty. Steve Smith is in and I can think of 215 reasons why he'll be feeling good. That's how many runs he scored in the first innings, in case you've forgotten. A push into the off-side takes him to three this time around, before a clipped four extends that tally to seven.

  •

    Over 28 - Australia 114-0 (Rogers 49, Warner 60)

Wood will operate from the Nursery End and begins with a yorker that Warner jams down. Wood continues with a testing line, Warner unable to bolster his score. The umpires had a look at the ball, too, but with it slipping through that holey contraption just fine there is no change. Maiden.

  •

    Over 27 - Australia 114-0 (Rogers 49, Warner 60)

I've got a feeling Warner is going to give the ball some 'pongo' this morning, a word I learnt from Michael Carberry. He's going to whack it, basically. Rogers is first to face Anderson, though, nudging away for a single. A leg bye follows with the nut clipping off Warner's limb. Rogers plunders the maiden four of the morning, piercing the covers.

  •

    SUNDAY, SUNDAY

Yo peeps, as the cool kids say. It must be pretty good to be an Australian right now. The Baggy Greens are 108-0 in their second innings in the second Investec Ashes Test at Lord's - handing them a lead of 362 over England - as they look to force a series-levelling victory. There was a brief shower in London this morning but skies are glorious now, so Alastair Cook's men are going to have to go some to save the game between now and Monday evening. Can they do it? Find out with us, as well as David Gower and the gang on Sky Sports Ashes.

  • Close - Australia 108-0, lead by 362 runs

England fought hard in the morning, but the damage has been done here. With Australia now having full licence to tee off in the morning, England are staring down the barrel of batting five sessions to try and chase 500 or avoid getting bowled out. Both those things look unlikely. England's batting efforts once again put in perspective by the ease with which Rogers and Warner plundered another 100 runs in the evening.

  •

    Over 26 - Australia 108-0 (Rogers 44, Warner 60)

Highlight of the day for England as a woman being shown on the big screen falls over trying to sit down. Classic comedy pratfall there, but she's still having a better game than Adam Lyth. Root laughing his head off at the top of his mark obviously, before getting hit for four by Warner. Which is less funny. Another dominant session for Australia. With the weather forecast now all clear, it's a question of when rather than if it goes 1-1.

  •

    Over 25 - Australia 103-0 (Rogers 43, Warner 56)

Wood doesn't appear to relish back-to-back Tests. Pace is well down here as a floaty half-volley is crunched back past him for four by Warner. Loose play and miss from Warner to end the over.

  •

    Over 24 - Australia 99-0 (Rogers 43, Warner 52)

Root into the attack with one fired down the legside. Three leg-byes off Warner's thigh-pad. Rogers carves through point for four more when Root offers some width.

  •

    Over 23 - Australia 92-0 (Rogers 39, Warner 52)

Warner through to 50 as he clips Wood away into the legside. Should just be a single, but a loose throw from Moeen allows a second run. That Lyth drop proving very costly, as it always threatened to do. Warner lethal in the third innings with a big lead behind him.

  •

    Over 22 - Australia 88-0 (Rogers 38, Warner 49)

Two edges from Warner fly down to third-man for four. Stokes ticking here.

  •

    Over 21 - Australia 76-0 (Rogers 38, Warner 37)

Warner honestly looks like he could get out to Moeen Ali at any moment. Also, Warner looks like he could hit Moeen Ali for four straight sixes at any moment.

  •

    Over 20 - Australia 74-0 (Rogers 37, Warner 36)

The floodlight pylons are going up at Lord's, with the umpires checking their light meters. Has got cloudy in the last 10 minutes. Warner seeing it okay, shovelling a pull shot out to deep midwicket for two. Chops the last ball of the over straight into the turf, and gets in behind to play a textbook back-foot defence as the ball bounces back towards the stumps. Great technique.

  •

    Over 19 - Australia 72-0 (Rogers 37, Warner 34)

Warner beaten outside the off stump by one that spins sharply from Moeen. Not a great sight for England. Deft late cut brings Warner three.

  •

    Over 18 - Australia 69-0 (Rogers 37, Warner 31)

Stokes on for his first bowl of the innings. Looked to be carrying a bit of an injury when he batted, and doesn't look entirely comfortable here either. Not a great start, with errors in both line and length allowing Rogers to pull for four then clip for two. Better end to the over, with Stokes jagging a cutter past Rogers' inside edge and just wide of the off stump.

  •

    Over 17 - Australia 63-0 (Rogers 31, Warner 31)

Warner in two minds here, which is strange as he's rarely even in one mind. Wants to get after Moeen, doesn't want to get out to him again. At the moment he's doing nothing, just prodding around in faintly unconvincing defence.

  •

    Over 16 - Australia 62-0 (Rogers 29, Warner 31)

Rogers' policy of either missing or edging the ball wide of the slips is much more successful than the England top order's option where they edge it straight to the keeper. Hopefully England's batsmen will watch and learn. Low full-toss from Wood, and Rogers edges an attempted drive wide of second slip for four. Adds a single to long-leg before Wood sends a bouncer looping high over Warner. Probably lucky not to be called wide.

  •

    Over 15 - Australia 56-0 (Rogers 25, Warner 30)

Warner gets a telling off for running on the pitch when taking two to deep backward square leg. Three runs off the over moves the Australia advantage along to 310. We have a further 11 overs to go on day three at Lord's.

  •

    Over 14 - Australia 53-0 (Rogers 25, Warner 27)

Maiden from Wood - Cook tries his best to spoil it with a shy at the stumps at the non-striker's end from his position at short mid-wicket. Thankfully for the bowler, there's someone backing up

  •

    Over 13 - Australia 53-0 (Rogers 25, Warner 27)

Rogers shows his delicate side, at least in cricketing terms. He gets down on one knee to play a premeditated lap shot against Moeen, netting him three comfortable runs. Australia coach Darren Lehmann has come down to ground level to take a look at proceedings, perching himself next to Peter Siddle on the boundary edge.

  •

    Over 12 - Australia 50-0 (Rogers 22, Warner 27)

Warner ominously getting into his stride now - how England must be regretting that miss in the slips by Lyth when he had nothing to his name. The left-hander slams Wood through the covers then, after the bowler straightens up his line, flicks him away fine to make it back-to-back boundaries. It's time for drinks at Lord's - Australia lead by 304 now as the half-century stand comes up between their openers.

  •

    Over 11 - Australia 41-0 (Rogers 21, Warner 19)

Glorious drive for four from Warner, though Moeen gifted him the opportunity to attack on the front foot with a long half volley. If you're an England fan hoping for rain, I've got some bad news - it seems there's a chance the showers on Sunday may arrive before play is due to get underway. Lord's is also a wonderful venue for drainage, too. The hosts may not get any help from the weather over the coming two days

  •

    Over 10 - Australia 37-0 (Rogers 21, Warner 15)

Wood has two deliveries from over the wicket, then decides to change the angle and come around. Rogers is tied up from either side, meaning it's a maiden to start from the Durham paceman. Australia's advantage remains at 291

  •

    Over 9 - Australia 37-0 (Rogers 21, Warner 15)

You know that Warner isn't going to be put off coming down the wicket to Moeen, despite that first-innings dismissal. He pats back the first two deliveries from the spinner, but then springs out of his crease to the next. This time, however, rather than looking to go big, he cleverly drives through a gap in the covers to pick up four. Double change for England - Mark Wood is going to take over from Broad.

  •

    Over 8 - Australia 32-0 (Rogers 20, Warner 11)

It's a bit quiet in the evening session, with Australia comfortably adding to their first-innings advantage. The crowd are a bit flat, though that could have more to do with the sun being out and the amount of Pimms that has been consumed over the course of the day. England are going for a change of pace, bringing Moeen Ali on in place of Anderson.

  •

    Over 7 - Australia 27-0 (Rogers 16, Warner 10)

More like it from Warner, as he leans on a full, wide delivery from Anderson and sends it racing through the covers for four. The bowler responds with a beauty to finish the over, beating the outside edge with one that nips away off the seam. Australia's advantage now stands at a seriously healthy 281 - bat until lunch tomorrow, perhaps? Their plans could depend on the weather, with the forecast suggesting some rain early on Sunday

  •

    Over 6 - Australia 22-0 (Rogers 15, Warner 6)

Warner decides he needs a change of bat - perhaps the latest one he's using also comes with a set of instructions. It doesn't help with his timing, as he bunts a drive back towards bowler Broad to finish a maiden from the seamer. Oddly, Australia could do with Rogers hogging most of the strike right now.

  •

    Over 5 - Australia 22-0 (Rogers 15, Warner 6)

Not great stuff from Anderson - he's still looking to swing it away to the lefties, but he's starting it off on the wrong line. Rogers cashes in, flicking one away fine for four

  •

    Over 4 - Australia 16-0 (Rogers 9, Warner 6)

England now down to two slips for Broad, who beats Rogers outside off stump with one that goes beautifully away from the left-hander on the angle. Warner clips a couple off his hip to finish the over, taking Australia's lead to 270.

  •

    Over 3 - Australia 11-0 (Rogers 6, Warner 4)

Rogers shows the way forward for Australia, belting Anderson straight down the ground for four. He's looking more like Warner than Warner, who plays and misses at one delivery and then edges the next. It's at a great height for Lyth at a fifth slip to take, but he gets his hands in a terrible position and lets it burst through. It goes down as four in the book too, meaning Warner is now up and running.

  •

    Over 2 - Australia 2-0 (Rogers 2, Warner 0)

Warner is fortunate when an attempted flick in font of square leg nearly carries to the fielder. Ballance was the man there, and he's left holding his hand after attempting to dive low down and take the chance. However, it bounced well in front of him. Australia's lead still stands at 256 after a maiden from Stuart Broad.

  •

    Over 1 - Australia 2-0 (Rogers 2, Warner 0)

Chris Rogers opens his account in the second innings, and Australia's for that matter, with a nudge off his hip at the end of Anderson's opening over for two. The England seamer had moved the majority of the deliveries away from the left-hander, though there was also one bouncer thrown in (not literally, of course) for good measure.

  •

So, England are sent back out into the field. Australia's plan is clear - hit quick runs, put the game well out of their rivals' reach and leave themselves with enough time to take 10 wickets, weather permitting of course. This is also a great opportunity for David Warner to get some runs under his belt.

  • WICKET! - Broad c S Marsh b Johnson 21

Broad becomes the final wicket to go down, caught well by sub Shaun Marsh at first slip after having a wild swipe at Johnson. Australia make it clear quickly - they're going to bat again, rather than let England have another go immediately

  •

    Over 90 - England 312-9 (Broad 21, Anderson 6)

Anderson gets off the mark with a well-timed thump through wide mid-on - no fielder anywhere near there, so he was always safe to take the aerial route. After the four, The Burnley Lara adds a couple more with a push through point, meaning England now trail by just the 254 runs.

  •

    Over 89 - England 306-9 (Broad 21, Anderson 0)

Broad is often peppered with short stuff but Johnson will probably angle in some yorkers here. I would not be surprised if I heard the sound of ball on stumps - but I don't. Maiden.

  •

    Over 88 - England 306-9 (Broad 21, Anderson 0)

Broad and Anderson are very likely to be bowling soon, reckons Athers, but what can they drag England up to first?

  • WICKET! - Wood b Hazlewood 4 - Eng 306-9

Full and straight, that's the ticket. Wood the next to return to the hutch.

  •

    Over 87 - England 305-8 (Broad 20, Wood 4)

I remember when Broad and Wood combined for a very rapid lower-order partnership against New Zealand earlier this summer. It was at Headingley, I'm sure. Another would do England the world of good here. They take the home team past 300 with some lusty blows.

  •

    Over 86 - England 294-8 (Broad 13, Wood 0)

Moeen's dismissal was preceded by Broad clobbering Hazlewood into the on-side for two and then tumbling over as he picked up one more.

  • WICKET - Moeen lbw Hazlewood 39 - Eng 294-8

Moeen is thumped on the knee roll by a straight Hazlewood ball. There is no bat, the line is fine - it's as plum as possible, in fact - so nothing can save him on this occasion. Cheerio, Mo.

  •

    Over 85 - England 291-7 (Moeen Ali 39, Broad 10)

Broad toe-ends Starc over David Warner at point to collect two. Warner would have needed a step-ladder to reach that one. Broad then gets into double figures with a clip to short mid-off.

  •

    Over 84 - England 288-7 (Moeen Ali 39, Broad 7)

Hazlewood, into his 19th over, is first up this evening. If 4pm can be classed as evening. Nothing too dramatic here. Three from the over.

  • Sky Bet

England have shortened from 33/1 to 25/1 after that session. All going their way. Or not. Australia are 1/3 to win, and the draw is 5/2. Moeen Ali is 5/1 to make a century, which will be entertaining. Click here for all Sky Bet's live in-play Ashes markets.

  • Tea - England 285-7, trail by 283

England have got halfway to Australia's total. But it's cost them seven wickets. Only three of those have fallen today, though, with Stokes and Cook batting superbly before falling to very much the fifth string of the Aussie bowling attack. Moeen has played a characteristically loose and breezy hand for 38 not out. Needs the tail to help him get through this new ball and, ideally, take the follow-on decision out of Australian hands.

  •

    Over 83 - England 285-7 (Moeen Ali 38, Broad 5)

Moeen baseballs Starc through mid-off for three. Broad punches through cover for two and adds a single from the final ball of the over. In between, a bouncer sails over his head and Nevill's for four byes. Broad gets through to tea, which is a decent effort. England still having a decent day, but there was just too much damage to repair.

  •

    Over 82 - England 275-7 (Moeen Ali 35, Broad 2)

Cheers around Lord's as Broad gets bat on ball against Johnson. Remarkable state of affairs for a man who five years ago scored 169 in a Test match on this ground. He's off the mark now, defending solidly enough off the back foot through point. A misfield turns a single into two.

  •

    Over 81 - England 272-7 (Moeen Ali 34, Broad 0)

Starc with the new pill. Moeen pushes neatly down the ground, but can't get the second run he wants. Four balls for Broad to survive, which he does in superb style. Four very different plays and misses, from the prod to the full-blooded swish via the pretending-to-have-played-deliberately-inside-the-line. Great range.

  •

    Over 80 - England 271-7 (Moeen Ali 33, Broad 0)

Moeen Ali shrewdly deciding he might not have much longer to bat here. Thwacks Lyon down the ground for four, and then takes a single from the third ball of the over. What will Broad do? Big shot surely on the cards, but no. Manages to restrain himself. New ball available.

  •

    Only 79 - England 266-7 (Moeen Ali 28, Broad 0)

Broad plays and misses before trying to duck a length ball. Luckily for him it's wide of the stumps. This is Marsh with the old ball, remember. Broad against Johnson with the new ball in a few minutes' time could be ugly. Marsh doing a fine job for his side today, though, dismissing both England's set batsmen.

  • WICKET! Cook b Marsh 96 - Eng 266-7

Still no home Ashes century for Cook. Like Stokes earlier, he drags the ball into the stumps to hand Marsh a wicket. On another day that would have flashed past the leg stump and away for the four to bring up the hundred. Today is not that day.

  •

    Over 78 - England 266-6 (Cook 96, Moeen Ali 28)

Lucky escape here for Moeen, lazily forward to Lyon and hit on the pad. Dharmasena says not out, and Clarke decides to review because a) it looks really out, and b) he gets his reviews back in two overs anyway. Hitting leg stump hard, but not hard enough to tun that amber umpire's call light red. Moeen, obviously, creams the last ball of the over for four.

  •

    Over 77 - England 262-6 (Cook 96, Moeen Ali 24)

Cook picks up two off Marsh, and then wanders a long way across his stumps to flick four through square-leg. Big trouble if he'd missed that, but it never looked like happening. This is now Cook's highest Ashes score in England (or Wales).

  •

    Over 76 - England 255-6 (Cook 90, Moeen Ali 24)

Lovely shot from Moeen Ali, down the track to Lyon and languidly hitting him straight back down the ground for six. Landed straight on the advertising hoarding, which is strangely satisfying for some reason. The 250 is up for England.

  •

    Over 75 - England 249-6 (Cook 89, Moeen Ali 18)

Maiden over from Marsh to Moeen Ali. Game in a pre-new-ball holding pattern here.

  •

    Over 74 - England 249-6 (Cook 89, Moeen Ali 18)

New ball just six overs away now. Going to be a decisive hour either side of tea. Massive for England if this pair are there to face it. Nothing for Johnson here with the old nut.

  •

    Over 73 - England 247-6 (Cook 88, Moeen Ali 17)

Flowing cover-drive brings Moeen two runs as the point sweeper has to cover ground to cut off the boundary. Marsh off-line with the last ball of the over, which flicks off Moeen's hip and away for four leg-byes.

  •

    Over 72 - England 241-6 (Cook 88, Moeen Ali 15)

Moeen is teasing the fielders. It's entertaining and amusing, sure, but I'm not sure it's a great long-term plan and it's also not good for the supporters' nerves. Pull shot this time, in the air between two men on the legside. Gets him a single. Cook rumbles on with a coruscating square-cut that fair races up the hill to the boundary. Follows that up with a nailed pull to the boundary sweeper. Looks in supreme touch here. Better from Moeen to end the over, a solid punch into the covers and a scampered single.

  •

    Over 71 - England 234-6 (Cook 83, Moeen 13)

That first Ashes hundred for Alastair Cook on home soil? It's on, I think. The England skipper is timing the ball nicely and picks up two with another sweet stroke. If he can cut out the occasional waft, something we see from the penultimate ball of Hazlewood's over, three figures looks likely... Drinks.

  •

    Over 70 - England 232-6 (Cook 81, Moeen 13)

Spinner to spinner as Lyon pits his wits against Moeen. Lyon bossed the opening exchanges but a well-timed sweep from Moeen adds four runs to England's total.

  •

    Over 69 - England 228-6 (Cook 81, Moeen 9)

The new McGrath aka Josh Hazlewood has the nut in his hands now. A long and successful international career beckons for this lad, you feel, but he's not been as good today as he was last night when England's innings was in tatters. Cook swivels and gets the paceman away for four but there is more pain to come for Hazlewood, a wild wide delivery sails past Nevill for byes. It was nearer first slip than the keeper!

  •

    Over 68 - England 220-6 (Cook 77, Moeen 9)

Cook nurdles Lyon for one before Moeen sees out the over. Tidy stuff from the tweaker.

  •

    Over 67 - England 219-6 (Cook 76, Moeen 9)

Whenever Moeen shoulders arms to a ball I worry - he has been out that way before. This time, though, his leave is a good 'un but his extremely sumptuous cover drive is better. No chasing that one, nor an unconvincing clip of his hip that lifts over Rogers and hurries to the hoardings.

  •

    Over 66 - England 211-6 (Cook 76, Moeen 1)

I was going to roll out a pathetic line about England trying to tame Lyon. They didn't. Moeen is in and, as he often does, looks like he could just as easily cart umpteen boundaries as loop lamely to a fielder.

  • WICKET! Buttler c Nevill b Lyon 13 - Eng 210-6

Buttler gets the faintest of edges on the first ball of Lyon's new spell. No doubt about this landing safely in Nevill's gloves. Slap bang in the middle of them.

  •

    Over 65 - England 210-5 (Cook 76, Buttler 13)

How are you feeling, Mr Smith? Cook plays a majestic on-drive off Starc, the ball easing to the fence. A gorgeous cover drive follows, once again going for four.

  •

    Over 64 - England 202-5 (Cook 68, Buttler 13)

It's very hard to criticise Steve Smith at the moment, what with him in a quite frankly ridiculous run of form with the blade. But he makes a potentially big error by dropping Cook at square leg, the ball hit hard, sure, but it's a chance you'd expect a fielder of his capabilities to take. The 200 is up.

  •

    Over 63 - England 197-5 (Cook 63, Buttler 13)

The ball ain't doing a great deal and it's still a while to go until the new one can be taken. Cook drills the aging conker down the ground for two but is made uncomfortable by a decent in-swinger from Starc last up.

  •

    Over 62 - England 194-5 (Cook 61, Buttler 13)

It's clear Australia think they can get some joy making Buttler feel for the ball outside off stump, his near-miss a couple of overs back proof of that. No issues here, though, with a punch through extra-cover garnering him a third boundary.

  •

    Over 61 - England 190-5 (Cook 61, Buttler 9)

After the late drama in the last over, the next, bowled by Starc, is pretty sedate. That is until Starc sprays the ball too wide and is dispatched to the ropes by Cook.

  •

    Over 60 - England 186-5 (Cook 57, Buttler 9)

Cook pulls a back-of-a-length ball from Johnson away for one. Buttler can't do the same, beaten by a pearler of a ball from the man England fans love to jeer. Johnson was almost cheering when Buttler edged him through to Nevill but replays show the ball grazed the ground before finding the mitt.

  •

    Over 59 - England 185-5 (Cook 56, Buttler 9)

It's Mitchells from both ends, with Starc also handed the conker by Pup. Buttler, who, like Stokes, could swell England's total quickly if he stays at the crease, pierces the covers delightfully to notch a boundary.

  •

    Over 58 - England 181-5 (Cook 56, Buttler 5)

Nasser Hussain's advice to England: "Bat and bat long". Johnson starts to Cook, having hit on the arm with a stinger before lunch, and rolls out some short stuff to keep Chef on his toes. A fuller one follows but Cook is up to the task, getting his willow down with ease. His thou-shalt-not-pass ethos could serve England well.

  • Sky Bet

Australia still short-priced favourites at 2/5, but they've drifted slightly since the start of play. The draw now just 2/1, with tomorrow's forecast definitely factored into those prices. England are 33/1, while in more relevant news Cook is 5/4 for what would be his first home Ashes century. Click here for all Sky Bet's live in-play Ashes markets.

  • Lunch - England 181-5, trail by 385 runs

Australia still miles ahead in the match, but England retain some foothold. More evidence that away from the new ball taking wickets is going to be hard yakka, and Australia still need 15 of them. If tomorrow's forecast rain arrives, then that follow-on target becomes a huge goal for England. A Sunday washout and having to bat again could well scupper Australia completely. England would love this pair to get through to the second new ball just before tea.

  •

    Over 57 - England 181-5 (Cook 56, Buttler 5)

Two singles from the final over of the session. The late loss of Stokes a huge blow, but that's a far better session for England after a Test match they've spent camped firmly on the back foot. Cook's been at his resilient best, and Stokes was excellent before that misjudgement against Marsh. Good session for England, pitch looks flat again now the ball's not swinging.

  •

    Over 56 - England 179-5 (Cook 55, Buttler 4)

Good short ball from Johnson. Cook initially thinks about having a hook at it, but decides that's not a good scheme. Decides instead to just try and leave it alone. That doesn't go brilliantly either, and the England captain gets a whack right on the point of the elbow. Painful, sure, but does at least use up a couple of minutes while he gets some treatment and some of the fabled magic spray. He's a bit sore, but he'll continue. Johnson has him jerking out the way of another short ball in a fine over. Will only now be time for one more over before lunch, though, so that's Johnson done for the morning.

  •

    Over 55 - England 179-5 (Cook 55, Buttler 4)

Jos Buttler the new batsman for England. Deficit is still 391, so a huge job on once again to get up near that follow-on mark. Buttler off the mark from the last ball of the over with a glance down to the fine-leg boundary as Marsh gets the line wrong.

  • WICKET! Stokes b Marsh 87 - Eng 175-5

Australia have the breakthrough they wanted before lunch! Stokes looking to punch Marsh through the offside off the back foot but only succeeds in getting a thick inside edge into his stumps.

  •

    Over 54 - England 175-4 (Cook 55, Stokes 87)

Johnson back for a, what, three-over burst before lunch. He bowls to the left on this occasion, firing a yorker down the legside and past Nevill's despairing dive. Ball thuds into the fence in front of the MCC members for four byes.

  •

    Over 53 - England 171-4 (Cook 55, Stokes 87)

Mitchell Marsh into the attack, and almost does the trick for Australia as Stokes is tempted into a drive outside the off stump. Big outside edge flies at catchable height right into the gap between second and fourth slip and away for four. Next ball is short and wide, and a far more convincing boundary four for Stokes this time as he rocks back and cuts behind point.

  •

    Over 52 - England 163-4 (Cook 55, Stokes 79)

Smith continues. Everyone having enormous fun. Stokes punches down the ground for a single before Cook gets a hoik away out to deep midwicket for two. Last ball's the real prize, though, a filthy long-hop so wide and slow that it's on its way back down to earth before getting to Cook, who just about manages to reach it and plonk a cue-end out to cover. If he'd got out to that, we'd have had to shut Test cricket down on the spot.

  •

    Over 51 - England 160-4 (Cook 53, Stokes 78)

Carbon copy of Starc's last over. Cook gets a single for a defensive push to cover, Stokes gets a single for a slightly miscued pull shot out to the boundary sweeper.

  •

    Over 50 - England 158-4 (Cook 52, Stokes 77)

If there's a finer sight in this great game than filthy part-time legspin, I've yet to see it. Here's Steve Smith, whose absolute filth has been outrageously successful on this ground. Not this time, though, with a couple of early singles off full-tosses before the inevitable long-hop is crunched through cover by Stokes. Australia looking to buy a wicket, and they've got plenty of credit in the bank to be fair.

  •

    Over 49 - England 152-4 (Cook 51, Stokes 72)

Cook's defensive push into the covers brings a single before Stokes takes on a short ball from Starc and makes poor contact. Works out for the best, to be honest. Nobody in the ring on the legside, but two men back on the fence. Easy single.

  •

    Over 48 - England 150-4 (Cook 50, Stokes 71)

Lyon not quite getting it right this morning. That said, there's precious little to encourage him. Since this ball stopped swinging after about 10 overs last night things have once again got very easy for the batsmen. Last ball of the over is too full, too straight, and that's just where Cook wants it. Clip through midwicket brings three and an excellent half-century.

  •

    Over 47 - England 146-4 (Cook 47, Stokes 70)

Starc goes really full, and Cook squirts a bottom edge down past second slip for a couple of runs before once again working the ball off his pads into the legside for two more. Cook in his element here, so much more comfortable than at Cardiff when he tried to join in with all the aggressive boys. You have to be true to yourself, and Cook is a world-class leaver and nurdler. He's showing that today.

  •

    Over 46 - England 142-4 (Cook 43, Stokes 70)

Cook has over 9000 runs. I'd estimate - almost certainly incorrectly - that at least 6500 of those have been nurdled off his pads. The one he gets in this over from Lyon definitely was.

  •

    Over 45 - England 141-4 (Cook 42, Stokes 70)

Stokes looking so good here, whipping Starc through midwicket for three. Cook merrily cooking away at the other end, nurdling a single. Great situation for Cook, this. Three days to just bat for as long as he likes. Glorious.

  •

    Over 44 - England 137-4 (Cook 41, Stokes 67)

Starc is tested in the deep when Stokes whips Lyon away, but the seamer is up to the task and prevents a boundary. Four from the over in total as we stop for drinks. I'm having Assam tea, if you're interested.

  •

    Over 42 - England 133-4 (Cook 40, Stokes 63)

Stokes sweeps Lyon to backward square for three as England continue to make steady progress.

  •

    Over 41 - England 130-4 (Cook 40, Stokes 61)

Having seen his skipper hit four, Stokes follows suit, biffing Hazlewood to the mid-off fence. A no-ball will sour Hazlewood's mood, too. The paceman is perked up when he hits Stokes on the pad, so much so that he reviews the not-out lbw decision. Bad move, Josh, the ball pitched outside the line. Cook and Stokes have now put on 100.

  •

    Over 40 - England 124-4 (Cook 40, Stokes 56)

"Ooooooh!" yelps Bumble as Cook clatters a Lyon straight ball into his legs. The commentator is less jumpy - and slightly surprised - when Cook skips down the wicket and plonks the twirler over his bonce for four.

  •

    Over 39 - England 120-4 (Cook 36, Stokes 56)

Hazlewood has had enough of round the wicket, back over he gets a delivery to swing in to Cook, which the batsman clips away for one. The Aussie quick cannot tempt Stokes with a wide nut, however.

  •

    Over 38 - England 119-4 (Cook 35, Stokes 56)

Lyon bowls, Cook blocks, that's the story of the over - until Cook digs one out and punches it to extra-cover for a single to retain the strike.

  •

    Over 37 - England 118-4 (Cook 34, Stokes 56)

The champagne is flowing at Lord's and it's not even midday. Australia haven't had the fizz they had last night during the opening stages this morning, but Johnson pesters Stokes with a couple of full balls and one which reverse swings, if only mildly. Stokes pulls for four to deny Mitch a maiden.

  •

    Over 36 - England 114-4 (Cook 34, Stokes 52)

Cook gets in the runs here, elegantly guiding Hazlewood fine and for four. The round-the-wicket ploy by the lofty seamer not paying dividends on this occasion.

  •

    Over 35 - England 108-4 (Cook 28, Stokes 52)

Johnson tucks Stokes up with a corker, one which whistles past the inside edge and through to Nevill. Stokes responds well, however, pushing through the covers to secure his fifty. Classy shot from the Durham dynamo.

  •

    Over 34 - England 104-4 (Cook 28, Stokes 48)

Hazlewood is pretty metronomic but is punished when straying here, pulled clinically to the fence by Cook. The England leader tries to unfurl another of his favourite shots, the cut, but only plinks it into the ground.

  •

    Over 33 - England 100-4 (Cook 24, Stokes 48)

Stokes, for all his glittering array of strokes, is far from a one-trick pony - he has a forward defence that many a batsman would be proud of. He displays it to Johnson, before a slanting ball ricochets off his pad, procures England two leg byes, and brings up the hundred.

  •

    Over 32 - England 98-4 (Cook 24, Stokes 48)

Cook will likely drop anchor here, safe in the knowledge that if he stays in, Stokes will go at a decent lick at the other end. There are a few on-side nudges from Cook - and a mild waft outside off - but no runs from Hazlewood's set of six.

  •

    Over 31 - England 98-4 (Cook 24, Stokes 48)

I've got a feeling Johnson will com steaming in today like a runaway train. Cook is forced on to the back foot to block the first ball before he angles down to third man for a couple. A fuller delivery, something that did for Balance last evening, is well dealt with by Cook, who then clips towards midwicket for one. Stokes goes up and over the cordon to score four but cannot get his fifty in this over, defending the last.

  •

    Over 30 - England 91-4 (Cook 21, Stokes 44)

Hazlewood, having been praised by Ponting in the build-up, begins proceedings by bowling to Stokes, the first angles wide of the left-hander, the next two are straighter. Stokes then edges unconvincingly through the slips for a streaky four, a clip off his pads for two later on is more befitting of his talent.

  •

    BIG MORNING

England's collapse - and mini-recovery - aside means they require a further 282 runs to avoid the follow-on. Can they do it? We'll find out when the action gets underway at 11am at a sunny Lord's.

  •

    WELCOME TO LORD'S

Good morning. HQ turned from a batsman's paradise to a batsman's nightmare on Friday, when after Australia racked up 566-8 declared England sunk to 30-4 in the evening session. Ben Stokes (38no) and Alastair Cook (21no) eased the home side's crisis, guiding them to 85-4 at stumps, so they are now just the 481 runs in arrears...

  • Close - England 85-4, trail by 481 runs

That's ended up an even better day for Australia than the first, with that four-wicket blitz when England batted kicking the day forward after two sessions spent - with all due respect to Steve Smith's brilliance - in a holding pattern. Everyone knew Australia's innings would end somewhere between 550 and 600; it was just a question of precisely how and precisely when. How England would bat was less clear, although recent evidence suggests that 30-3 was a fair shout. Cook and Stokes did make the smallest of starts to the largest of fightbacks for England.

  •

    Over 29 - England 85-4 (Cook 21, Stokes 38)

Australia give Stokes a single in order to bowl at Cook. Odd choice, as Stokes is the likelier to do something daft in the final over of the day. Cook plays the rest of the over in sensible fashion.

  •

    Over 28 - England 84-4 (Cook 21, Stokes 37)

Cook plays out a maiden from Hazlewood without alarm. One more over tonight, and it's Lyon to bowl it.

  •

    Over 27 - England 84-4 (Cook 21, Stokes 37)

Couple of reasonably sharp singles in this over, and Stokes not moving all that well in taking them. Throwing things forward, it's likely England can cope without his bowling for the rest of this match and there's a good break before the next Test, but it's a worry for the hosts.

  •

    Over 26 - England 81-4 (Cook 19, Stokes 36)

Mitchell Marsh shamefully failed to get out lbw earlier, and now he fails to produce a non-threatening maiden over when handed the ball. He's no kind of replacement for Shane Watson. Cook beaten by one that moves away before collecting a quick single. Stokes works one off his pads for two. Brings up the 50 partnership.

  •

    Over 25 - England 78-4 (Cook 18, Stokes 34)

Hamstring twang, back knack or possibly side strain are the latest medical appraisals/guesses of Stokes' situation. Or it might even be his calf. Seems to be comfortable enough as he plays out a maiden from Johnson, but there are a couple of stretches between deliveries.

  •

    Over 24 - England 78-4 (Cook 18, Stokes 34)

Almost one of the all-time great dismissals here. Would've been the icing on Australia's cake. Routine leave from Cook outside off stump, but he then drags his back foot and momentarily it's up in the air. Cook not paying any attention at all, but only just gets his foot back down before Nevill has the bails off. Maiden over for Lyon after that Stokes assault in his last over.

  •

    Over 23 - England 78-4 (Cook 18, Stokes 34)

Hazlewood is round the wicket now to Cook. Good move. Immediately the England captain forced to play a lot more, but his defensive technique stands up to the task. Quick single means Cook will keep the strike.

  •

    Over 22 - England 77-4 (Cook 17, Stokes 34)

It's 2013/14 all over again, with Stokes launching a one-man counter attack. Twice he's down the track to Lyon, first going over midwicket for a one-bounce four and then, even better, launching a huge straight six. Clean hitting. He's some talent. The six went into the top tier of the Edrich Stand. Physio on at the end of the over, though. Stokes seems to be struggling with his back, or possibly hamstring. I'm not a doctor.

  •

    Over 21 - England 65-4 (Cook 17, Stokes 22)

Good batting from Stokes, mixing sound judgement with the biffed boundaries. Couple of leaves as Hazlewood pushes the ball across him before a defensive push brings a single. That brings one of the game's great leavers on strike, and Cook produces a masterclass to end the over. Three trademark leaves. Hazlewood might want to think about coming round the wicket if he continues against these left-handers.

  •

    Over 20 - England 64-4 (Cook 17, Stokes 21)

Serious pain here for Voges at short-leg. Nathan Lyon into the attack for the first time, and Stokes absolutely nails a sweep shot straight into the fielder's hip. He's down for a while, but is soon back on his feet and ready to continue. Tough cookie.

  •

    Over 19 - England 63-4 (Cook 17, Stokes 20)

These two have doubled the score now as Hazlewood looks to surprise Cook with a short ball and instead gets pulled through square-leg for four. Plenty of boundary options out there for these two with Clarke setting understandably attacking fields.

  •

    Over 18 - England 59-4 (Cook 13, Stokes 20)

Stokes counterpunching here, whipping Starc gloriously through square-leg for four after a scampered single from Cook. Ends the over with an even better boundary, standing tall and hitting Starc straight back down the ground for four. Almost enough to make you forget the match situation. Almost.

  •

    Over 17 - England 50-4 (Cook 12, Stokes 12)

Fifty up for England as a thick edge from Stokes flies wide of the slips and away for four.

  •

    Over 16 - England 46-4 (Cook 12, Stokes 8)

Top shot from Cook, flicking the ball off his toes to the square-leg boundary as Starc errs in line. Another hundred or so of those, and this game is back in the balance.

  •

    Over 15 - England 41-4 (Cook 8, Stokes 8)

These bowler-friendly pitches are no good. Balance between bat and ball all wrong. Cook jumps out of his bunker to play a pull shot at Johnson. The ball dribbles apologetically to mid-on, and there's no run.

  •

    Over 14 - England 41-4 (Cook 8, Stokes 8)

Cook and Stokes safely negotiate a Starc over to reach drinks. The England captain might need something stronger than water.

  •

    Over 13 - England 40-4 (Cook 7, Stokes 8)

Thirteen doesn't prove to be an unlucky number for the home team. That was left to overs one, nine, 10 and 11! Stokes pushes Johnson gorgeously for four but the scorecard still makes for very grim reading if you are an England fan.

  •

    Over 12 - England 32-4 (Cook 7, Stokes 0)

Calm amongst the storm as Cook picks up two from the over. One wicket fell yesterday, 11 have tumbled today. Not what I expected in the slightest.

  •

    Over 11 - England 30-4 (Cook 5, Stokes 0)

Johnson is pumped up and causing carnage. Stokes almost chops onto his stumps, then has to survive a caught-behind appeal - the ball hit his trousers - before almost crunching into his timbers once again. A penny for Cook's thoughts...

  • WICKET! - Root c Nevill b Johnson 1 - Eng 30-4

This is going very wrong very quickly for England. Root, after being bombarded by short balls, tries to loft Johnson away but only succeeds in finding Nevill's mitts.

  •

    Over 10 - England 29-3 (Cook 5, Root 1)

England are in monumental trouble. Hazlewood bowls a probing line to Cook after sending Bell packing and seeing Root pick up a single off him.

  • WICKET! - Bell b Hazlewood 1 - Eng 29-3

The stumps are shattered again. Hazlewood follows Johnson's lead and sends Bell back into the hutch. England are in dire need of another Joe Root special.

  •

    Over 9 - England 29-2 (Cook 5, Bell 1)

Immediate success for Johnson, castling Ballance third delivery. Bell gets off the mark. Australia way, way on top.

  • WICKET! - Ballance b Johnson 23 - Eng 28-2

Ballance punches Johnson's first ball for four - and is duly punished by having his furniture rearranged. Full and straight does the trick.

  •

    Over 8 - England 24-1 (Cook 5, Ballance 19)

I don't know Ballance - he's an international cricketer, I'm a mere keyboard cruncher - but I sense he is a hard worker. The red splotches on his blade suggest he spends hour after hour in the nets and he adds another mark by blocking Hazlewood, before taking one to fine leg.

  •

    Over 7- England 23-1 (Cook 5, Ballance 18)

Starc generates some swing to Cook but the England skipper clips to fine leg for a single. Ballance also picks up one on the leg-side as the home team rebuild after the early casualty.

  •

    Over 5 - England 17-1 (Cook 4, Ballance 13)

Ballance is forced to dig out a Starc yorker before edging into his body. Stiff examination this. A cut through the slip cordon is streaky but garners Ballance four. Marsh will think he should have got a hand to it, though.

  •

    Over 4 - England 10-1 (Cook 4, Ballance 6)

If there's one place not to bowl to Cook, it's on his toes. Hazlewood forgets this and is duly whipped for four, but his line is better thereafter.

  •

    Over 3 - England 6-1 (Cook 0, Ballance 6)

Starc is sticking with a straight line and Ballance profits, picking up an easy leg-side two. When Starc goes wider, Ballance is more than happy to leave it be. He then ducks a sharp bumper.

  •

    Over 2 - England 4-1 (Cook 0, Ballance 4)

Hazlewood gets one to move, the ball clipping off Cook's trouser before reaching Nevill. The bowler appeals but knows it's futile. Johnson, meanwhile, is limbering up. Will we see him shortly?

  •

    Over 1 - England 4-1 (Cook 0, Ballance 4)

A quick switch from batter to bowler for Starc but he appears to be suffering no ill-effects from that or the ankle knock he picked up at Cardiff. However, after dismissing Lyth, he strays too straight and allows Ballance to tuck him off his pads for four. Ballance fends off a bouncer last up.

  • WICKET! - Lyth c Nevill b Starc 0 - Eng 0-1

A lazy stroke - Bumble's word, not mine - sees Lyth clip behind to debuting wicketkeeper Nevill second ball. Dreadful start for England, superb one for the Baggy Greens.

  •

    Over 149 - Australia 566-8dec (Starc 12no)

Johnson plays an off-side heave against Broad, scoring two, before hitting to midwicket for a single. Starc takes one to deep backward square and Johnson holes out, handing Broad his fourth wicket.

  •

    WICKET! - Johnson c Anderson b Broad 15 - Aus 566-8dec

Johnson biffs Broad down the ground and into Anderson's mitts. Michael Clarke calls time on Australia's innings. It's time for England to bat.

  • Sky Bet

The two-way scrap between Australia and the draw continues, with the tourists now 5/6 with Sky Bet and the draw 6/5. England openers Alastair Cook and Adam Lyth are 11/8 and 15/8 respectively to make 50 when England get their first innings under way. Check out all the live odds from Lord's here.

  • Tea - Australia 562-7

Four wickets in the session for England, two for Broad - comfortably the standout bowler - and two for Root as Smith's magnificent innings finally came to a halt for a mere 215. England may find themselves batting straight after tea. It won't be long after, in any case.

  •

    Over 148 - Australia 562-7 (Johnson 12, Starc 11)

Root tries for the legside stumping again off Johnson. Only goes slightly wrong, in that Johnson doesn't leave his crease, and the ball beats Buttler and runs away for four byes. Johnson gets a single from the final ball of the session, and now it's all a question of when Clarke decides to call time on the Aussie innings.

  •

    Over 147 - Australia 557-7 (Johnson 11, Starc 11)

Lovely shot from Starc, using long levers to launch the ball over wide long-on for six as Moeen Ali returns to the attack.

  •

    Over 146 - Australia 551-7 (Johnson 11, Starc 5)

Starc works to leg for a couple and then miscues an attempted slog-sweep off Root and somehow manages to plink the ball into a gap between midwicket and mid-on. Johnson gives Root the charge, and the bowler sees him coming. Tries to fire one down the legside, but Johnson able to stick his right boot on it.

  •

    Over 145 - Australia 548-7 (Johnson 11, Starc 2)

Broad got two of his wickets today - Voges and Marsh - with leg-cutters. Wood trying to get in on the act now, and deceives Johnson with one that stops and moves away. Good over spoiled by a wide long-hop that Johnson puts away in fine style, standing tall and crashing the ball through point.

  •

    Over 144 - Australia 542-7 (Johnson 6, Starc 2)

Root nipping in with 2-51 out of 542-7 here yet more evidence of his undoubted evil genius.

  •

    Over 143 - Australia 540-7 (Johnson 6, Starc 0)

Australia about 200-6 today. Requires some context, sure, but it's undeniably a touch worrying for England given the task ahead of them with the bat over the next couple of days. Johnson clubs Wood for four through extra-cover with that uncomplicated swing of the bat that makes you think he really should have scored more runs than he has over the years. Makes batting look so easy at times for a number eight.

  •

    Over 142 - Australia 536-7 (Johnson 2, Starc 0)

Root causing all sort of problems here! Big lbw shout against Mitchell Starc first ball - inside edge saves him - and the next ball comes off the inside edge, misses off stump and hits Buttler on the pad.

  • WICKET! Nevill c Moeen Ali b Root 45

The collapse is on! Nevill tries to go down the ground but miscues to mid-off where Moeen takes a good low catch. Another wicket for Root.

  •

    Over 141 - Australia 534-6 (Nevill 44, Johnson 1)

Good over from Wood, a maiden to Johnson who has a couple of swings and misses outside the off stump. Fair to say Johnson has licence here.

  •

    Over 140 - Australia 534-6 (Nevill 44, Johnson 1)

Mitchell Johnson off the mark with a single. Root's third wicket of the series already, while Smith and Rogers have both registered their highest Test scores.

  • WICKET! Smith lbw b Root 215 - Aus 533-6

A rather shoddy end to a marvellous innings. Smith given lbw to Root trying to reverse-sweep, and the review can't save him despite an orange light for point of impact. Superb innings, though, and it's unlikely to halt Australia's march towards a declaration too much.

  •

    Over 139 - Australia 531-5 (Smith 214, Nevill 43)

Another lovely shot from Nevill, rocking back and carving Wood down to the third-man boundary for four. Big lbw shout follows, which looks pretty straight but involves plenty of inside edge en route to the pad.

  •

    Over 138 - Australia 527-5 (Smith 214, Nevill 39)

Nice time to play your debut Test innings, and Nevill is enjoying himself enormously. Skips down the wicket again to clip Root over midwicket for four. England will be batting shortly after tea, I'd suggest.

  •

    Over 137 - Australia 521-5 (Smith 213, Nevill 34)

Smith shapes up to absolutely slog Wood over the legside, and then at the last minute adjusts and instead plays a textbook cover-drive for one. Glorious. Next time he's on strike, he does wheel out some legside whippage and picks up four and then a single. Everything must go now.

  •

    Over 136 - Australia 513-5 (Smith 207, Nevill 33)

Hammer down for Australia now. Smith down the track to drive Root, and a misfield from Broad at mid-off allows three. Good footwork from Nevill too, getting down to the pitch of the ball and whipping the ball through midwicket for four.

  •

    Over 135 - Australia 505-5 (Smith 204, Nevill 27)

Landmarks. Hefty, hefty landmarks. Australia's 500 is up before Smith gets to his first Test double century by whipping Moeen through midwicket for four. Stunning innings. First double hundred for an Australia on this ground since 1938.

  •

    Over 134 - Australia 498-5 (Smith 198, Nevill 26)

Smith rattling along towards 200 now. Root into the attack with a nice gentle loosener outside off stump, and Smith plonks it through point in uncomplicated fashion for four. Adds a single on the legside, before Nevill gets a couple with a thick inside edge past leg slip.

  •

    Over 133 - Australia 491-5 (Smith 193, Nevill 24)

Moeen yells loudly when he hits Nevill on the pad. The on-field umpire says no, leading to an England review. Ball-tracking shows the nut would have only clipped leg stump so umpire's call stands. Drinks.

  •

    Over 132 - Australia 490-5 (Smith 192, Nevill 24)

A deliberate off-side dab for four takes Smith into the 190s, a score he swells further by clipping Anderson over his noggin for one. Anderson's line strays to Nevill and the ball races past Buttler for four leg byes.

  •

    Over 131 - Australia 480-5 (Smith 187, Nevill 24)

Smith slog-sweeps Moeen for four, Stokes unable to pick up the ball under the Lord's sky. Smith looks to cut Moeen off the last but can't connect.

  •

    Over 130 - Australia 474-5 (Smith 183, Nevill 24)

It's not often that glamour model - and renowned author - Katie "Jordan" Price gets a mention in the commentary box but Bumble thinks of her when Jordan Price comes on as sub fielder with Cook taking a breather. Four from Anderson's over.

  •

    Over 129 - Australia 472-5 (Smith 183, Nevill 20)

Moeen, into his 32nd over, is hit away, Nevill darting down the track and dashing the ball through midwicket. Neat little innings this.

  •

    Over 128 - Australia 468-5 (Smith 182, Nevill 17)

Anderson is denied a first wicket when Root cannot cling on to Nevill's loft over backward point. Probably a half-chance at best. Jimmy then tests Nevill with a ball that squares up and squirts off his thigh.

  •

    Over 127 - Australia 464-5 (Smith 182, Nevill 13)

There is some spin for Moeen, which will please both him and Nathan Lyon. Nevill races for three and is home comfortably when the bowler dislodges the bails. A classic late cut from Smith yields four.

  •

    Over 126 - Australia 457-5 (Smith 178, Nevill 10)

Smith attempts to wallop a short Broad ball but it doesn't go very far and he only picks up one. Nevill's timing is better as he punches through the covers for three. Look to have a bit about him, this lad. A leg-side nudge then sees Smith collect two.

  •

    Over 125 - Australia 451-5 (Smith 175, Nevill 7)

Nevill notches his maiden runs in Test cricket, of Moeen, as Australia perhaps recalibrate what a good score is. The new boy guides the last ball of the over though gully for four.

  •

    Over 124 - Australia 442-5 (Smith 173, Nevill 0)

A cracking wicket-maiden from Broad. Debutant Nevill, who has a first-class batting average in the mid-40s, is in to partner Smith.

  • WICKET! Marsh b Broad 12 - Aus 442-5

Broad is doing a stellar job, picking up his third wicket when Marsh chops a slowish delivery onto his timbers. Australia are letting this slip a little.

  •

    Over 123 - Australia 442-4 (Smith 173, Marsh 12)

Decent stuff this from Moeen. A maiden, with Smith unable to biff him.

  •

    Over 122 - Australia 442-4 (Smith 173, Marsh 12)

Stokes is forced to pick up his knees like a schoolboy doing cross country as Smith squirts Broad to the third-man area, the fielder's excellent scampering limiting the batsman to three. Marsh does bosh a boundary though third-man, though. You're right, Shane, he's not hanging around.

  •

    Over 121 - Australia 433-4 (Smith 170, Marsh 6)

Shane Warne informs us that Marsh, who is playing in his fifth Test, doesn't like to hang around. That said, he is content to defend against Moeen - for now.

  •

    Over 120 - Australia 432-4 (Smith 169, Marsh 6)

Mitch Marsh, Watson's replacement, is in fine fettle, having plundered hundreds in warm-up games against Kent and Essex. He begins with a corking push for four.

  • WICKET! Voges c Buttler b Broad 25 - Aus 426-4

Broad finds the perfect length and Voges, who was looking good, tickles the ball behind to the keeper. What have you got, Mr Marsh?

  •

    Over 119 - Australia 426-3 (Smith 169, Voges 25)

Moeen and his tweakers kick us off after the 40-minute interval. Plenty of close catchers and one of them, Cook, plucks the ball. Just a shame for the hosts it was off Voges' pad and not his glove.

  • Sky Bet

It's a two-horse race, and a tight one according to Sky Bet. Australia are 10/11 to win, with the draw 11/10. England are 16/1, if you're interested. Smith now 8/13 to score Australia's first Test double-century away from home since Jason Gillespie in 2006. Check out all the latest in-play odds from Lord's here.

  • Lunch - Australia 424-3

Suspect we might see a change of pace from Australia in the afternoon after a quiet morning session. You'd think they'd like to do some bowling tonight, but they'll want to get to around 600 first.

  •

    Over 118 - Australia 424-3 (Smith 168, Voges 24)

Funky field for the last over before lunch. Short mid-on and short mid-off in place about 15 yards from the bat for Voges. Was caught on the drive at Cardiff, but that was more at extra-cover. Different pitch this as well. Voges not tempted into anything. Maiden over to end a better session for England. Two wickets handy, but perhaps more importantly they've retained control of the scoring rate.

  •

    Over 117 - Australia 424-3 (Smith 168, Voges 24)

Moeen drops short to Smith, who's on it in a flash. Rocks back and hammers a pull shot for four.

  •

    Over 116 - Australia 420-3 (Smith 164, Voges 24)

Loosener from Wood is carved past gully by Smith, with Lyth doing good work out on the boundary to keep it down to two. Lyth in business again later in the over as Smith punches off the back foot.

  •

    Over 115 - Australia 417-3 (Smith 161, Voges 24)

Good over from Moeen. Just a single from it, and Voges just looking a touch uncertain in defence on a couple of occasions.

  •

    Over 114 - Australia 416-3 (Smith 160, Voges 24)

Voges getting the ball into the legside easily here, working Stokes away off the hip for an easy two.

  •

    Over 113 - Australia 413-3 (Smith 159, Voges 22)

Smith eases Moeen down the ground for an easy single before Voges gets another four, fetching a sweep shot from well outside off stump and getting it away fine on the legside. Another fine shot; Voges looking good here. Not quite as much Middlesex experience as Rogers, but looks similarly comfortable in these surroundings.

  •

    Over 112 - Australia 408-3 (Smith 158, Voges 18)

Quick single for Smith brings up Australia's 400, before Voges continues his lively start with a fine leg glance for four as Stokes errs in line and then drives all along the ground through extra-cover for another boundary.

  •

    Over 111 - Australia 399-3 (Smith 157, Voges 10)

Big ot spin from Moeen Ali now, and a wonderful shot from Voges. Just too full from the England spinner, and Voges whips him through the tiniest of gaps at midwicket.

  •

    Over 110 - Australia 394-3 (Smith 156, Voges 6)

Big lbw shout from Stokes against Smith, who finally misses one. Straight enough, but too high. Clearing the bails with something to spare. Full, wide delivery from Stokes gets crunched through point for four. Single gets Voges on strike, and he's crunched on the pads too. Still looks high, but Alastair Cook decides to have a look at this. Our first review of the Test. It's umpire's call on both point of impact and the bails, so the original decision stands. And fair enough, too. Not one of those silly ones where the ball's knocking leg stump out of the ground and it's still umpire's call.

  •

    Over 109 - Australia 389-3 (Smith 151, Voges 6)

Voges off the mark with a rather more convincing pull shot than his skipper's. Races away for four, and he picks up two more from the last ball of the over.

  •

    Over 108 - Australia 383-3 (Smith 151, Voges 0)

Handsome cover-drive from Smith gets no reward beyond its aesthetic appeal, with Adam Lyth fielding smartly. Maiden over from Stokes.

  •

    Over 107 - Australia 383-3 (Smith 151, Voges 0)

Adam Voges the new batsman, who remain too many for not enough as far as England are concerned.

  • WICKET! Clarke c Ballance b Wood 7 - Aus 383-3

Can only assume this Clarke innings has been an elaborate scam designed to spook England's batsmen into thinking this pitch isn't flat. Plays and misses at Wood, then chips one up in the air on the legside, then pulls straight into the hands of Ballance at square-leg. Odd innings from the Aussie skipper.

  •

    Over 106 - Australia 383-2 (Smith 151, Clarke 7)

Misfield at point gives Clarke a single before Smith drives gloriously between Stokes and mid-on for four to reach his 150. Lots of moving parts when Smith bats - or indeed, when Smith does literally anything - but the position he ended up in to play that shot was absolutely perfect.

  •

    Over 105 - Australia 378-2 (Smith 147, Clarke 6)

Look up 'sticking to their task' in the dictionary, and you'll find a picture of this England bowling performance. Not sure how that would really work. And dictionaries don't even have pictures, do they? Anyway. Maiden over from Wood.

  •

    Over 104 - Australia 378-2 (Smith 147, Clarke 6)

Stokes is solid if unspectacular, when England really need spectacular. Clarke isn't seduced into having a wallop as drinks approaches. Maiden.

  •

    Over 103 - Australia 378-2 (Smith 147, Clarke 6)

Clarke and Smith milk runs off Wood's over. No demons for the batsmen to contend with here. What can Stokes do?

  •

    Over 102 - Australia 371-2 (Smith 145, Clarke 3)

A fairly uneventful over from Broad as Australia add two to their tally. Mikey Holding also reveals the devastating news that the blimp is not in operation today. I'd love to go up in one of those things.

  •

    Over 101 - Australia 369-2 (Smith 144, Clarke 2)

Wood is granted his first bowl of the morning. The Durham quick's hair is very flat today. Perhaps he's lost his grooming product? Smith nudges Wood away for one before Clarke defends the last.

  •

    Over 100 - Australia 368-2 (Smith 143, Clarke 2)

Broad tempts Clarke into having a waft and it's not a bad ploy; the batsman got out that way as Australia subsided in their second innings in Cardiff.

  •

    Over 99 - Australia 368-2 (Smith 143, Clarke 2)

Smith hooks Anderson for a boundary as he seemingly eases towards 150. The bowler can't have liked that so doesn't go too short afterwards.

  •

    Over 98 - Australia 364-2 (Smith 139, Clarke 2)

Broad is beginning to find his radar, finding some movement against Clarke. The Aussie skipper gets off nought with a whip into the leg-side for a couple.

  •

    Over 97 - Australia 362-2 (Smith 139, Clarke 0)

The leftie is out but Anderson is still keen to come around the wicket to right-hander Smith. There are a few bouncers and some fuller stuff. Maiden.

  •

    Over 96 - Australia 362-2 (Smith 139, Clarke 0)

Smith aims to play Broad through the off-side but only succeeds in plinking past his stumps and into leg. A rare unconvincing stroke from the run machine. Rogers is far from unconvincing as he creams Broad through the covers but he is cleaned up from ball four, inside edging onto his wicket. Clarke into the fray.

  • WICKET! Rogers b Broad 173 - Aus 362-2

Success at last for England as Broad jags one back into the left-hander, who clips into his poles. Rogers gets a fully deserved round of applause as he strolls off.

  •

    Over 95 - Australia 357-1 (Rogers 169, Smith 138)

Smith looks like a man at the peak of his powers. A gorgeous on-drive off Anderson procures him a boundary. When Rogers gets back on strike, he is greeted with bumpers, but ducks well to avoid a repeat of the morning's first over.

  •

    Over 94 - Australia 352-1 (Rogers 169, Smith 133)

Broad clatters into Rogers' pad but with the ball pitching outside the line of leg stump, the batsman has no worries. Rogers tucks away behind square for two next up before Broad responds with a fizzer that goes between body and bat.

  •

    Over 93 - Australia 350-1 (Rogers 167, Smith 133)

Anderson comes around the wicket to Rogers but the batter nudges him away into the leg side for a routine single. Anderson is over the wicket to Smith and gets the treatment, a driveable nut is drilled through extra-cover and to the fence. A good leave from Smith - one right out of the Nasser Hussain textbook - follows as Anderson locates a more probing length. There's also a turned-down lbw appeal.

  •

    Over 92 - Australia 345-1 (Rogers 166, Smith 129)

"Attack the stumps," says Shane Warne, as Stuart Broad bowls wide of Steven Smith's off pole. Broad finally bowls one a little straighter, the ball angling in towards the right-hander, while the last is a decent tempter. Maiden.

  •

    Over 91 - Australia 345-1 (Rogers 166, Smith 129)

Anderson gets the first ball of the day to rise and, after taking his eyes off it, Rogers is smacked on the side of his helmet. The batsman swiftly removes his headgear and is dabbed behind his ear by the Australia medic. This could be a concern as Rogers missed the recent West Indies series with concussion after being hit by a local bowler in the nets. He is fit to continue here, though, and soon pierces the covers to record a boundary. That makes this the highest partnership for any wicket by Australia in a Test at Lord's. Another Rogers four ends the over.

  •

    ONTO THE TURF

Cook leads his charges through the Long Room and onto the field, with plenty of applause as they go. Rogers and Smith follow close behind. We're all set and ready to begin!

  •

    FIVE MINUTES UNTIL PLAY

Australia's innings will resume shortly. Remember not only can you enjoy our informative and witty updates here, you can also watch the second Ashes Test live on Sky Sports Ashes.

  •

    ONE BREAKTHROUGH

The only moment of joy for the home side was somewhat of a gift, with David Warner (38) getting too excited after whacking Moeen Ali for a couple of fours and looping straight into the hands, the very safe hands, of James Anderson at deep mid-off in the opening session. Silly boy!

  •

    BATTING PROWESS

Chris Rogers (158no) and Steve Smith (129no) led Australia's charge, racking up their fifth and 10th Test match tons respectively and combining for an unbroken stand of 259.

  •

    WELCOME TO DAY TWO

Good morning everybody and thanks for joining our coverage of day two of the second Ashes Test at Lord's. England were jubilant on Saturday night after beating Australia in Cardiff but were reminded how arduous Test cricket can be at HQ on Thursday as the Baggy Greens reached stumps on a whopping 337-1 after winning the toss and electing to bat.

  • Close - Australia 337-1

Brutal day for England. What a comedown from the highs of that superb win in Cardiff as everything went Australia's way from the moment that Michael Clarke called correctly at the toss. Smith and Rogers were superb after Warner tossed his chance away. In many ways the strangest thing given that scorecard is that England really didn't do that much wrong. Bell grassing a low chance when Smith had 50 the only real black mark. England's batsmen should be looking to make hay when their chance comes along. Join us tomorrow.

  •

    Over 90 - Australia 337-1 (Rogers 158, Smith 129)

New ball, genuine edge from Rogers, and it doesn't carry to Bell at slip. Frustrating old business for bowlers today. Australia will be hoping scoreboard pressure helps them when England come to bat on this featherbed.

  •

    Over 89 - Australia 333-1 (Rogers 155, Smith 129)

Australia on to 333. They'll want to make sure no bad luck befalls them.

  •

    Over 88 - Australia 332-1 (Rogers 155, Smith 128)

Broad squares Rogers up defending on the back foot. But when you've got 150 against your name, you're seeing it pretty well. Rogers adjusts and the ball still comes off somewhere near the middle of the bat. And three balls later he sees one a touch too wide and a touch too full, and punches it past a diving mid-off for four.

  •

    Over 87 - Australia 327-1 (Rogers 151, Smith 127)

Rogers steers a thick outside edge along the ground and wide of the two remaining slips to bring up his first 150 in Test cricket. Anderson congratulates him on the landmark with a couple of bouncers. First one is a good one, forcing Rogers into sharp evasive action. Second one shorter and higher, Rogers barely having to move as the ball arcs apologetically through to the keeper. Anderson round the wicket to finish the over, and does find a hint of swing back into Rogers. Not particularly troubling, though, for the man 151 not out.

  •

    Over 86 - Australia 323-1 (Rogers 147, Smith 127)

Broad didn't get the brand new ball this evening, but he's into the attack now. Rogers nudges and nurdles a two and a single to reach 147. Appropriate, that, because England need snookers.

  •

    Over 85 - Australia 320-1 (Rogers 144, Smith 127)

Bad ball from Anderson, and he knows it, dropping short and offering width. Smith too good to miss out on that gift, and cheerfully thumps it through the covers for four.

  •

    Over 84 - Australia 315-1 (Rogers 143, Smith 123)

England have stuck to it today, in fairness. Smith and Rogers have been superb, but what good fortune there has been out there has gone the way of the visitors. Wood arcs one past Smith's outside edge, before Smith hits back with a powerful pull shot in front of square off what looked a decent enough bumper. Great shot.

  •

    Over 83 - Australia 311-1 (Rogers 143, Smith 119)

The day started with Rogers pinging the new ball through the covers for four off Anderson. Now, 82 overs and 300 runs later, we get to see it again.

  •

    Over 82 - Australia 307-1 (Rogers 139, Smith 119)

Wood continues, but he does have the shiny new ball in his hand. Smith unperturbed, though, clipping a straight ball through square-leg for two in that way that fools you into thinking he might be an lbw candidate even though he never, ever misses, and then drives the last ball of the over to the cover boundary.

  •

    Over 81 - Australia 301-1 (Rogers 139, Smith 113)

Moeen continues, no sign of the new ball yet. More sign of that Rogers late cut, though. Death by a thousand cuts for England today. Just brings him three runs this time, though, as Australia march on to 300-1.

  •

    Over 80 - Australia 297-1 (Rogers 136, Smith 112)

Counting down the balls now. Nearly time for the new ball. Five or six wickets in the last 10 overs, and it's honours even. Wood comes in off his (even) short(er) run for the last ball of the over. Literally bowled that off five paces. Still 85mph. Smith leaves it aone.

  •

    Over 79 - Australia 296-1 (Rogers 135, Smith 112)

Easy single for Smith on the offside before Rogers adds three with a clip off his toes. Long day chasing the ball around NW8 for England's fielders.

  •

    Over 78 - Australia 292-1 (Rogers 132, Smith 110)

Three runs off Wood's over. England need something dramatic from Broad and Anderson with the second new ball if they are to salvage anything from this day.

  •

    Over 77 - Australia 289-1 (Rogers 131, Smith 109)

Maiden over from Moeen. Umpires have the light meters out. Batsmen clearly struggling to see the ball at 289-1.

  •

    Over 76 - Australia 289-1 (Rogers 131, Smith 109)

Cook has got plenty of fielders in attacking spots but that also means there are gaps in the field. Rogers whips Stokes away past fine leg for four when the Durham dynamo's radar lets him down. The new ball is approaching so at least that will perk England up.

  •

    Over 75 - Australia 283-1 (Rogers 126, Smith 109)

In a surprise turn of events, Moeen bowls tightly. Just one from the over, to Smith.

  •

    Over 74 - Australia 282-1 (Rogers 126, Smith 108)

Rogers has scored over 1,000 runs in his last 12 Tests, so why on earth is he going to call it quits at the end of this series? A dodgy stroke against Stokes that flashes off the blade shows he's not faultless.

  •

    Over 73 - Australia 272-1 (Rogers 116, Smith 108)

A nearly moment for England as Smith gloves a Moeen delivery just out of the reach of wicketkeeper Buttler. Eight runs from the over, though, as Australia carry on apace.

  •

    Over 72 - Australia 264-1 (Rogers 113, Smith 103)

Rogers is batting with the verve of a man 10 years his junior - or perhaps the freedom of a man who knows his Test career will soon be over. A splendid stroke to the off-side fence - his preferred fence by a long, long, way - adds to his boundary count as Stokes enters the attack. Midwicket is also punctured by Rogers, though, as the runs continue to come in droves.

  •

    Over 71 - Australia 254-1 (Rogers 103, Smith 103)

Smith chunters to himself after failing to clobber Moeen past the infield. Still, I'm sure a ton is ample consolation. A maiden over for the England tweaker who is now through 16.

  •

    Over 70 - Australia 254-1 (Rogers 103, Smith 103)

A memorable moment for Rogers, as a drive down the ground off Anderson secures him a century in his last Test at Lord's, a ground he knows like the proverbial back of his hand. On a grander scale, though, it takes Australia into an even more dominant position. England's Cardiff jubilation seems a long time ago right now. The Baggy Greens are looking at a very big total.

  •

    Over 69 - Australia 250-1 (Rogers 99, Smith 103)

Moeen tries to ruffle Rogers by darting in his deliveries. The first five balls are dots but Rogers whips away the last to move on to 99. The 250 is up as well.

  •

    Over 68 - Australia 249-1 (Rogers 98, Smith 103)

When you need a breakthrough, you call for Jimmy. Anderson cannot deny Smith a ton, though, with the uber-talented right-hander slapping through midwicket to bring up three figures off 161 balls. His name will shortly be etched onto the Lord's honours board.

  •

    Over 67 - Australia 243-1 (Rogers 97, Smith 98)

"This is an interesting time to bring on Joe Root," says Mikey Holding. A daft time, I would say. Smith slaps Root over his head for six as he eyes up an eighth ton in 14 Tests.

  •

    Over 66 - Australia 232-1 (Rogers 97, Smith 87)

Rogers is a true master of the cut, another, against Moeen, scoots way to the ropes and takes the opener into the nervous nineties. A half-hearted lbw appeal from Moeen fails to stir umpire Kumar Dharmasena and Rogers responds with a stroke through the covers for four. Three needed, Chris.

  •

    Over 65 - Australia 224-1 (Rogers 89, Smith 87)

If you bowl on Smith's legs, Stuart, he is going to whip you away all day long. Broad may not mind Smith picking up a single, however, as it brings Rogers on to strike. The 37-year-old has got somewhat stuck in the late eighties but edges closer to the nineties with a single. Smith then times the pants off another delivery to procure four through midwicket.

  •

    Over 64 - Australia 218-1 (Rogers 88, Smith 82)

Smith crunches Moeen straight down the ground to join his pal, Rogers, in the eighties. Are they competing to see who can notch a ton first? My money's on Smith. Sorry, Chris!

  •

    Over 63 - Australia 212-1 (Rogers 87, Smith 77)

Rogers has surpassed fifty in eight of his last nine innings but not gone on to make three figures. That must be praying on his mind. At the other end, Smith is looking serene. He runs four after tucking Broad away into the vast Lord's outfield.

  •

    Over 62 - Australia 208-1 (Rogers 87, Smith 73)

Sloppiness from England in the field sees Australia pick up two overthrows after Smith pushes away for what should have been just a single. Moeen tries his luck around the wicket, with no joy.

  •

    Over 61 - Australia 205-1 (Rogers 87, Smith 70)

Broad has bowled some absolute corkers today, there's another one to Rogers in that set of six that fizzes past the blade. Just one from the over.

  •

    Over 60 - Australia 204-1 (Rogers 87, Smith 69)

Runs are not hard to accrue for Australia, especially when Moeen's length is off. A gorgeous late cut - Bumble's favourite shot - garners Rogers a 14th boundary of the day as the tourists pass 200.

  •

    Over 59 - Australia 197-1 (Rogers 83, Smith 66)

As is often the case, Broad has bowled pretty well but not got the wickets to show for it. Ballance pleases his bowler by diving well to stop a probable boundary, while Broad pleases himself by getting one to seam and drift away from left-hander Rogers.

  •

    Over 58 - Australia 195-1 (Rogers 82, Smith 65)

Right, sit back comfortably for a major tumbling of wickets... Moeen gets us underway after tea with Smith picking up three easy runs and Rogers pushing square for another.

  • Sky Bet

The draw the big mover in the betting after that session. That's now just 6/4 with Sky Bet, with Australia drifting a touch from their lunchtime 4/5 to 5/6. England way out at 13/2 now with Australia marching towards an imposing first-innings total. Rogers is 2/5 for a century, Smith 4/6. Click here for all the latest live odds.

  • Tea - Australia 191-1

All Australia in that session, although England's bowlers deserve some credit for at least keeping some control over the scoring-rate in difficult bowling conditions. Couple of half-chances missed and the off run of the balls for Rogers and Smith, but generally they've been untroubled as they set about putting Australia in control of this Test match after getting first use of a slow, flat pitch.

  •

    Over 57 - Australia 191-1 (Rogers 81, Smith 62)

Adam Lyth bowling the 30th over of the afternoon. Two facts that mean it's decisively England's session, despite Rogers calmly playing out a maiden to complete a wicketless session.

  •

    Over 56 - Australia 191-1 (Rogers 81, Smith 62)

Strangled lbw shout against Smith. Spinning past the leg stump. Australia's number there picks up two with a nudge off the hip, and it's notable how, since that shambolic first-innings dismissal in Cardiff, Smith is much more willing to play Moeen from the crease.

  •

    Over 55 - Australia 189-1 (Rogers 81, Smith 60)

England might have to bring Wood's imaginary horse on for a bowl here. Desperate for a breakthrough now. Maiden over from Wood. Horse, as far as I can tell, unused there.

  •

    Over 54 - Australia 189-1 (Rogers 81, Smith 60)

Australia batting superbly here, but also enjoying the odd moment of good fortune. Rogers tries to sweep Moeen but gets only a glove on it. Ball then ricochets off Buttler's glove, but just out of Root's reach at leg slip and the batsmen get three.

  •

    Over 53 - Australia 186-1 (Rogers 78, Smith 59)

Decent lbw shout as Smith goes across his stumps and plays across the line, but Marais Erasmus says not out. Cook at slip indicates that it might be high. They're both right. It's missing. Smith pulls to long-leg for a single before Rogers gets four more as the ball races across the outfield after being given the most gentle encouragement off the bat. Great fun to bat here at the moment. Point drops back after that shot, so Rogers helps himself to a single.

  •

    Over 52 - Australia 180-1 (Rogers 73, Smith 58)

Classic Smith scampering here as a couple of dabs out to deep point bring twos instead of singles. Tries it again, but on this occasion he's timed it too well and the ball gets to Moeen too quickly. Last ball of Stokes' over is an absolutely rank long-hop that Rogers does well just to reach, never mind smack through cover-point for four.

  •

    Over 51 - Australia 171-1 (Rogers 69, Smith 54)

Wood jumps wide on the crease but overpitches. Smith punches down the ground and scampers back for three runs as opening bowlers Broad and Anderson combine in the field to prevent the boundary. England have got Moeen Ali down at third-man for Rogers. It's really a catching position for Rogers' uppercut. Wood offers him a couple of chances to play along, but he's not interested.

  •

    Over 50 - Australia 168-1 (Rogers 69, Smith 51)

Drop! Stokes gets one to seam away and find the outside edge of Smith's attempted drive. The ball just about carries to Bell at second slip, but he can't hold on. Fine bowling for no reward from Stokes, who is cutting an increasingly frustrated figure here.

  • Over 49 - Australia 167-1 (Rogers 69, Smith 50)

Smith works to leg to complete a patient, workmanlike half-century. Not at his fluent best, but a few sparkling shots among the more workaday nurdlings. And he looks ominously well set now as the England bowlers toil for a breakthrough. Rogers goes easily underneath a couple of Wood bouncers.

  •

    Over 48 - Australia 166-1 (Rogers 69, Smith 49)

Tidy over from Stokes ends with an lbw appeal against Rogers to file under 'optimistic'. Probably missing a second set given Stokes' angle from round the wicket.

  •

    Over 47 - Australia 165-1 (Rogers 69, Smith 48)

Slice of good fortune for each batsman in the last few minutes as Rogers looks to drive on the up through the offside and gets a thick inside edge past the leg stump for a single. Frustration for England. Smith tucks a single on the legside before Rogers gets lucky once again, chasing a wide ball from Wood and slicing a thick outside edge in the air but just wide of gully for four.

  •

    Over 46 - Australia 159-1 (Rogers 64, Smith 47)

Almost. England have hammered away outside off stump. Finally they find Smith's outside edge, but the ball flashes wide of second slip and down to the fine-leg boundary. Smith moves to within three of a first 50 of the series with a clip off his toes for two.

  •

    Over 45 - Australia 153-1 (Rogers 64, Smith 41)

Wood back on. England need him to make something happen, but there's nothing there for him in this over. Smith drives hard to point, but gets only a single thanks to a smart diving stop from Stokes.

  •

    Over 44 - Australia 152-1 (Rogers 64, Smith 40)

Both these batsmen now safely through the nervous 30s. Alarm bells ringing for England. Smith makes the crucial move from 39 to 40 with a back-foot punch to deep point off Stokes, who completes another tidy over. Been the most consistent of England's bowlers today, but also looked the least threatening.

  •

    Over 43 - Australia 151-1 (Rogers 64, Smith 39)

"Rooooooooooooooooooooooooot!" Sorry, couldn't help himself, shouting that is pretty addictive. There's not much to shout about from the over, though, with the tweaker cut to the ropes by a completely at home Rogers.

  •

    Over 42 - Australia 146-1 (Rogers 60, Smith 38)

A seamer is back but it's Moeen who makes way. Stokes flourished the last time he played in a Test at Lords', so can he do so again here? Not just yet, as Smith whacks him through backward point for four.

  •

    Over 41 - Australia 141-1 (Rogers 60, Smith 33)

Despite praising Root a moment ago, I can't imagine he is set for a lengthy spell. Surely it's only a matter of time before a seamer returns?

  •

    Over 40 - Australia 138-1 (Rogers 60, Smith 30)

That loose Moeen ball arrives. Rogers deals with it beautifully, showing expert touch to rack up his ninth boundary of the day. He is scoring at exactly one run every two balls.

  •

    Over 39 - Australia 133-1 (Rogers 56, Smith 29)

There's nothing Joe Root can't do. He bats, he bowls, he fields, he laughs when his skipper gets one in the man bits. Hell, I'd even let him have a go renovating my kitchen. Anyway, he unleashes his oft-underrated spin here, shipping four runs.

  •

    Over 38 - Australia 129-1 (Rogers 52, Smith 29)

A maiden for Moeen. I thought he always offered up one loose ball an over? Not this time.

  •

    Over 37 - Australia 129-1 (Rogers 52, Smith 29)

Anderson continues around the wicket but doesn't look too threatening at present. Australia are making neat progress.

  •

    Over 36 - Australia 128-1 (Rogers 52, Smith 28)

Today's wicket-taker Moeen, a character who has a real knack of getting good players out, returns. Two from that over of twirl. You decide whether it's part-time twirl.

  •

    Over 35 - Australia 126-1 (Rogers 52, Smith 27)

Smith can play dashing strokes in any positon, though, as he shows by walloping the ball through gully for four. Class.

  •

    Over 33 - Australia 118-1 (Rogers 51, Smith 20)

Runs are not flowing at the rate they were before Warner's morning moment of madness. That's two maidens in a row for England. Pressure-building maidens?

  •

    Over 32 - Australia 118-1 (Rogers 51, Smith 20)

It's a veritable 'who's who?' at Lord's today, with plenty of famous faces in the stadium. Steve Waugh is in the house and so are Sourav Ganguly and Merv Hughes. Broad continues to impress with the conker, meanwhile.

  •

    Over 31 - Australia 118-1 (Rogers 51, Smith 20)

Having watched Rogers play a sumptuous stroke, Smith decides to do the same, Anderson crunched to the fence this time. Some late swing will cheer up the seamer but Smith deals with it okay on this occasion.

  •

    Over 30 - Australia 114-1 (Rogers 51, Smith 16)

Rogers secures his half-century by piercing the off-side from the last ball of Broad's latest over. Delight for the batter but despair for the bowler who was on course for a maiden.

  •

    Over 29 - Australia 110-1 (Rogers 47, Smith 16)

Rogers once again finds the wide open spaces at Lord's, picking up three as Gary Ballance runs into the yonder to pick up the ball. Speaking of wide, Anderson is just that to Smith. He hasn't been his usual tip-top self so far today, has Jimmy.

  •

    Over 28 - Australia 106-1 (Rogers 44, Smith 16)

Broad bounds in after his feed, boosted surely by a grub intake and the fact he has now up to fifth in the ICC Test bowling rankings. The lofty quick locates some movement against Smith. Rogers also picks up one but if Moeen's shy had hit the timbers a run-out may have been on. It wasn't close, though, not by a long way.

  • Sky Bet

Australia already odds-on favourites with Sky Bet after that morning session. The tourists are 4/5 to square the series here, with the draw 9/4 and another England victory out to 4/1 from 15/8 before the toss. Steve Smith has started well, and he's 5/2 to make a century. Chris Rogers is 11/8 to be Australia's top scorer after reaching lunch on 43 not out. Click here for all the latest live odds.

  • Lunch - Australia 104-1

Fine morning for Australia after winning an important toss. Warner gave England an absolute gift just after drinks, but that apart it's been hard yakka for the England bowlers on a flat pitch and fast outfield.

  •

    Over 27 - Australia 104-1 (Rogers 43, Smith 16)

Quiet over from Wood to end an excellent session for Australia, who go off for a famous Lord's lunch only one wicket down. They'll all enjoy their meals, with the possible exception of Warner who will eat a small amount before inexplicably throwing the rest away.

  •

    Over 26 - Australia 103-1 (Rogers 43, Smith 15)

Good spell this from Stokes. Gets one to straighten and square Smith up, beating the outside edge and flicking the right trouser pocket on its way into the slip cordon. Doesn't carry to Ian Bell at second slip, who does well to stop the ball getting through for more extras. Smith just a touch uncertain whether to play or leave outside off stump for the rest of the over. Survives, though, and keeps the strike with a single from the final ball.

  •

    Over 25 - Australia 102-1 (Rogers 43, Smith 14)

Rogers tries and fails to duck a short ball from Wood that skids through. Gets a whack on his back and a couple of leg-byes for his trouble.

  •

    Over 24 - Australia 100-1 (Rogers 43, Smith 14)

Australia reach three figures as a Rogers push back past Stokes almost reaches the rope, Wood doing good work to flick the ball back and save a run. Easier to chase those down when you have an imaginary horse, of course. Stokes hangs one up outside the off stump, tempting Smith into a big, loose drive. Luckily for Smith, he makes no contact.

  •

    Over 23 - Australia 97-1 (Rogers 40, Smith 14)

Moeen Ali's eventful spell comes to an end. Wood returns with a maiden over to Smith, who gets in a momentary tangle when trying to leave the ball but withdrawing the bat too late and deflecting the ball to third slip on the bounce.

  •

    Over 22 - Australia 97-1 (Rogers 40, Smith 14)

Glimpse of Smith's class here. Not just about smacking boundaries, this game. Stokes bowls a really good inswinger, the ball ducking in late, but Smith adjust his feet and hands to work the ball calmly into a legside gap for a single.

  •

    Over 21 - Australia 96-1 (Rogers 40, Smith 13)

Rogers escapes the 30s dangertime with a quick single. Smith then drives effortlessly straight down the ground into the pavilion gates for four. Mid-on and mid-off both quickly gave it up as a bad job. Ball racing across this outfield.

  •

    Over 20 - Australia 90-1 (Rogers 39, Smith 8)

Steve Smith lost his world number one ranking after the first Test. Seems to be batting better now he's only the second best batsman in the world. Making a mockery of the whole ranking system. Anyway, tidy enough first over from Ben Stokes, just a couple of singles from it.

  •

    Over 19 - Australia 88-1 (Rogers 38, Smith 7)

Glorious from Smith, stepping down the track to Moeen and punching a drive across the billiard-table outfield for four. Already plenty of evidence that batsmen will be getting full value for their shots out there.

  •

    Over 18 - Australia 83-1 (Rogers 38, Smith 2)

Of Australia's 21 dismissals so far in this series, six have been in the 30s. Shoddy work really, with Warner the latest not to kick on after making a start. Meanwhile, Anderson bowls a maiden over to Rogers, who remains in those danger 30s.

  •

    Over 17 - Australia 83-1 (Rogers 38, Smith 2)

Moeen almost gets Rogers in a spot of bother playing back to a good-length ball. The left-hander manages to squeeze the ball past short-leg off a thick inside edge. Three singles from the over.

  •

    Over 16 - Australia 80-1 (Rogers 36, Smith 1)

Quieter over. Couple of singles from it as Steve Smith gets off the mark. Fell twice for 33 in the first Test after spending the last 12 months scoring hundreds for fun.

  •

    Over 15 - Australia 78-1 (Rogers 35)

Huge bonus for England to get that wicket after an hour where they've not quite got things right.

  • WICKET! Warner c Anderson b Moeen Ali 38 - Aus 78-1

Eventful first over from Moeen Ali. Warner clubs the first two balls of the over for four. Ten runs from the first five balls of the over in all before Warner aims a big hit down the ground from the final ball and holes out to Anderson at long-off. What a gift for England after this great start for Australia.

  •

    Over 14 - Australia 68-0 (Rogers 34, Warner 29)

Having seen Warner move past his score, Rogers responds with a two and a four from the first two balls of Anderson's sixth over, the boundary shot beating Stokes in front of point. Anderson's next four nuts are dots.

  •

    Over 13 - Australia 62-0 (Rogers 28, Warner 29)

I told you Warner was getting his eye in. The swashbuckler flays Wood through the covers and holds his pose as if to say: 'I live that very much indeed'. A Warner block then scuttles to the boundary. The Aussies are motoring.

  • Over 12 - Australia 50-0 (Rogers 27, Warner 18)

Anderson is back, this time from the Nursery End after an initial spell at the Pavilion End. The Lancashire quick - who has just the 406 Test wickets - finds some shape but far too much midway through the over, the ball extremely wide and hurtling past Buttler for byes. The scintillating pace of the outfield is evident once again when Rogers' deft shot races to the ropes. Fifty up.

  •

    Over 11 - Australia 42-0 (Rogers 23, Warner 18)

Warner proves he is a cut above by carving Wood to the fence. He's beginning to get his eye in... Wood's riposte is brilliant, beating a coming-forward Warner all ends up after locating the perfect length. An lbw shout follows but with the ball clearly drifting wide, the appeal is a mild one. Warner soon adds another four. I love watching him bat, I'm just not so keen on the moustache!

  •

    Over 10 - Australia 34-0 (Rogers 23, Warner 10)

Broad was far from lethal in his previous over but unfurls an absolute pearler to Rogers here, somehow missing both the inside edge and the off-stump as the ball whistles through to Jos Buttler behind the stumps. Maiden.

  •

    Over 9 - Australia 34-0 (Rogers 23, Warner 10)

Mark Wood - the 2015 version of Simon Jones, if I may be so bold - is into the attack. Warner has a waft at his first but can't get the ball away. He gets the ball away later on, though, swatting the man with the imaginary horse into the on-side for his opening boundary.

  •

    Over 8 - Australia 30-0 (Rogers 23, Warner 6)

Mikey and Bumble - mainly Bumble - are now chatting about trainspotting. On the field, Broad is happy to continue pitching the ball wide of Rogers after coming around the wicket. He changes back to over after four uneventful deliveries and is immediately stroked into the covers for two.

  •

    Over 7 - Australia 28-0 (Rogers 21, Warner 6)

Anderson delivers a maiden over as Mikey Holding and Bumble discuss road works.

  •

    Over 6 - Australia 28-0 (Rogers 21, Warner 6)

Rogers has made seven hundreds at Lords - many of them for Middlesex - so should feel pretty comfortable with his surroundings. Though admittedly a county encounter with, say, Durham, does not quite have the intensity of an Ashes Test. A lovely push through midwicket brings up another boundary for the 37-year-old.

  •

    Over 5 - Australia 23-0 (Rogers 17, Warner 5)

Anderson changes his line of approach, opting to come around the wicket to the left-handed Rogers in the way Andrew Flintoff used to do to Adam Gilchrist. There are no immediate rewards, though. Rogers' nudge through the cordon lacks conviction but procures him four, Anderson responds with a corking seamer. Rogers ducks a bouncer last up.

  •

    Over 4 - Australia 19-0 (Rogers 13, Warner 5)

Broad tests Warner, first with a full ball which the batter angles scratchily towards slip and then with a jag-backer that the Aussie edges into himself. Broad is less dangerous to Rogers, mainly bowling wide of his off stump.

  •

    Over 3 - Australia 17-0 (Rogers 12, Warner 4)

It's been a real mixed bag from England's senior seamers early doors, straight balls and wide deliveries in equal measure. Warner ends Anderson's over with a well-timed push down the ground.

  •

    Over 2 - Australia 13-0 (Rogers 11, Warner 1)

Broad was majestic in Cardiff but his radar is a little skew-whiff to start here. He opens up with a no-ball and some wide-of-leg-stump deliveries. Warner scampers off zero after getting bat on a straight one before Rogers tucks through midwicket for three. Moeen, whose side appears to be giving him no gip whatsoever, scooting to retrieve the ball.

  •

    Over 1 - Australia 8-0 (Rogers 8, Warner 0)

It is Anderson who opens the bowling, under bright skies. His first is a straight one, while Rogers cannot pierce the covers from ball two. The veteran is looking to score, though, and soon flashes over the slip cordon for a streaky four, just out of the fielders' clutches. A classier boundary follows, a gorgeous drive through extra-cover.

    AUSTRALIA TEAM

Warner, Rogers, Smith, Clarke, Voges, M. Marsh, Nevill, Johnson, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood

  •

    ENGLAND TEAM

Cook Lyth, Ballance, Bell, Root, Stokes, Buttler, Moeen, Broad, Wood, Anderson

  • AUSTRALIA WIN TOSS AND BAT FIRST

The Baggy Greens will get first dig here after winning the coin flip. As expected, Peter Nevill makes his international bow behind the stumps while Mitchell Marsh ousts Shane Watson. England go with the same XI that performed so well in Wales.

  •

    AUSSIE ALTERATIONS

It would be a monumental surprise if England made any changes at Lord's, provided Moeen Ali overcomes a slight side niggle, but the tourists are set for two switches. Peter Nevill will don the wicketkeeping gloves with Brad Haddin missing the match for family reasons, while Mitchell Marsh is reportedly in line to replace Shane Watson - or Shane Watson lbw as he has cruelly been named in some quarters - as the Baggy Greens' all-rounder. The toss is coming up...

  •

    WELCOME TO LORD'S

Hot on the heels of their 169-run victory at Cardiff, England will be aiming to win their 50th Test against Australia on home soil and go 2-0 up in the Investec Ashes. We'll be there every step of the way, so stick with us for what will be a fantastic five days of cricket - if it goes five days, of course!
