Newman, who grew up in Indiana, and Johnson dominated most of the race but it was his sublime late pit-stop that proved to be the springboard to victory.
The win was Newman's first in 49 races, his drought stretching back to April 2012.
Johnson was leading with 27 laps remaining, but his Hendrick Motorsports crew could not get him back out quickly enough and Newman pounced.
He opted for a two-tyre change that was enough to put him in front, and he duly held on to claim the spoils and move right into contention for a place in the season-ending Chase for the Sprint Cup.
