Two-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo celebrated being kept on by Yamaha for next season by winning the Spanish MotoGP in commanding style.
Lorenzo savoured his first victory of the season by giving himself a special present on the eve of his 28th birthday by leading from pole to flag ahead of world champion Marc Marquez at Jerez on Sunday.
The 27-year-old from Mallorca delivered a perfect result for former Spanish King Juan Carlos, who was watching from the stands.
World champion Marc Marquez rode on his Honda despite a fractured little finger on his left hand and held off Italian legend and series leader Valentino Rossi, who had the consolation of becoming the first rider to achieve the 200 podium mark.
"It was a good race, I felt great and in reality it has been a perfect weekend," Lorenzo told reporters.
"I had no problems at any stage of the race, the brakes were fine, better than on other occasions and I was able to win."
Rossi extended his championship lead to 15 points over compatriot Andrea Dovizioso. He now has 82 points, with Dovizioso on 67 and Lorenzo on 62. Marquez is fourth with 56.
The Italian, who had won two of the three races coming into Jerez, said he hadn't felt comfortable throughout the weekend.
"I try and try and try to get up to Marc but my speed wasn't great and then my front wheel started to be unreliable so I eased up," said the 36-year-old Rossi.
"My 200th podium, that's not so bad!"
