The defending champion was advised to rest after suffering two nasty crashes that needed surgery.
Lorenzo broke his collarbone at Assen last month but finished fifth in the race despite it only coming a day after he went through his first operation.
He raced again at Sachsenring in Germany last weekend but crashed and bent the titanium plate that had been inserted during his first surgery - that has now been corrected by further time under the knife.
Lorenzo said over the weekend that he would be resting until the second US round at Indianapolis next month but that seems to have changed now.
He posted a picture on Twitter of him packing with the words 'almost ready for Laguna Seca' and then said: "Finally, we have decided to go.
"Following the final medical check and after speaking with Doctor Rodríguez, we are going to try. At the beginning I seriously thought that it might have been convenient to take the necessary time to recover and be back at Indy, but over the last two days I have felt much better so now I want to be there, although I will try to not take too many risks."
His Yamaha team manager Wilco Zeelenberg said they would set the strategy for the weekend once Lorenzo had arrived.
Marc Cots, a doctor at Barcelona's Catalunya general hospital, said on Tuesday: "His injury is healing well and looks completely normal.
"The plate we inserted is well positioned and we're pleased with the progress the injury is making. Jorge is physically capable of riding again now, just as he did at Assen immediately after his previous surgery.
"However, our advice is to be cautious and avoid the risk of another crash. But the decision on when to return is entirely up to him."
