The German, riding for Honda, moved to the top of the time-sheets late in the second session, demoting previous pace-setter Jorge Lorenzo to second.
Lorenzo had set the fastest time on Friday morning, his first lap on track not being beaten during the session, although Dani Pedrosa and Cal Crutchlow tried their utmost.
The same appeared set to happen in the second session but Lorenzo was finally nudged off the top of the podium by Bradl's lap of precisely one minute, 56 seconds.
Pedrosa took third place to continue a consistent run of performances with Valentino Rossi fourth for Yamaha and championship leader Marc Marquez back in fifth ahead of British pair Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith.
Bradl said: "It's nice to be first on Friday but, to be honest, it looks a bit better on paper than it does in reality.
"I am not really super happy with this first position today because we are still missing some confidence with the front of the bike - the front fork is not working as well as I would like.
"The times are really close together and it won't be easy for us on Saturday."
