Following a double race win in the opening round at Brands Hatch, a relaxed and confident Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider Byrne, starting from pole, cruised to victory in the first race at the Cheshire circuit on Monday.

Despite a strong finish, including a new lap record on the penultimate lap, Brookes was unable to pass the three time BSB champion, who secured his third win of the season and maintained a 100 per cent record in the process.

But, by posting the fastest time, Milwaukee Yamaha rider Brookes earned pole position for race two.

He was determined to lead from the front and made the most of his advantage, coming home 0.118 seconds ahead of Byrne, with Lloyds British GB Moto ace James Ellison finishing 4.892 seconds adrift in third.

Important

A delighted Brookes said: "I knew that I had to lead from the start. It was important to take the race to Shakey and I knew that if he was at the front, it would allow him to establish a rhythm , which makes him ever harder to beat.

"So it was always the plan and I did not leave the door open. If Shakey wanted the win, he was going to have to work very hard for it.

"The win is a great base for the Milwaukee Yamaha team and we can build on this strongly for the next round at Snetterton and the rest of the season."
