Juan Pablo Montoya has won the IndyCar meeting at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania, his first triumph since returning to the series following seven years with NASCAR.
It was the Colombian’s first win in an IndyCar for 14 years and first road course success since Watkins Glen in 2010 when racing in NASCAR.
Helio Castroneves was second, 2.34 seconds adrift, to make it a one-two finish for team owner Roger Penske.
Castroneves said of Montoya: "This guy is incredible, coming back after 15 years. I knew he would be a headache for us.”
The 38-year-old Montoya, who seized the lead with four laps to go when Tony Kanaan was forced into the pits for fuel, added: "You have got to be patient and run smart.”
With double points awarded in 500-mile races, Castroneves moved into a tie for the overall title with Will Power.
One-time race leader Power was hit with a blocking penalty on Castroneves late in the race and had to serve a drive-through penalty, and eventually finished 10th.
Carlos Munoz, Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon completed the top five.
