The Buffalo Bills have signed veteran free-agent running back Reggie Bush to a one-year contract.

The negotiations were completed after Bush travelled to Buffalo to take a physical and then met with Bills officials at their training camp facility outside Rochester.

Bush is a 10-year NFL veteran who played five games with San Francisco last year before suffering a season-ending left knee injury when he slipped on the bare concrete bordering the Edward Jones Dome field in St Louis.

The 31-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner will offer depth behind Bills starter LeSean McCoy, who has battled ankle problems this offseason.

Karlos Williams, who was the presumed No 2 back on the depth chart, has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

That means Bush will compete with Mike Gillislee and 2016 fifth-round pick Jonathan Williams, who was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated earlier this month.
