Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has signed a contract extension which ties him to the franchise through the 2020 season.

Tomlin is about to start his 11th season with the Steelers, having come into the NFL in 1999 with the Cincinnati Bengals before spells on the staff of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings.

The 45-year-old has guided the Steelers to five AFC North titles and became the youngest winning coach when Pittsburgh beat the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII in early 2009.

"I truly appreciate this contract extension, and I want to thank Art Rooney II for his support as well as everyone within the organisation," Tomlin said.

"My first 10 years in Pittsburgh have been an amazing experience for me and my family. I'm proud to call Pittsburgh home.
