Kliff Kingsbury is reportedly drawing interest from two NFL teams with head-coaching vacancies, despite posting a career losing record as Texas Tech's head coach.
Both Yahoo Sports and NFL.com reported on Tuesday that the Arizona Cardinals and the New York Jets plan to interview the former Red Raiders head coach to discuss their respective vacancies.
Texas Tech fired Kingsbury on November 26 after the team completed a 5-7 season, losing its last five games. The Red Raiders put up sub-500 marks in each of the past three seasons, leaving Kingsbury with a 35-40 record in his six years on the job.
The team finished with losing records in Big 12 play in all six of Kingsbury's seasons.
Kingsbury landed a new job in December when he was hired as Southern California's offensive coordinator. However, the reports on Tuesday indicated he still could move on for an NFL position.
Kingsbury, 39, threw for 12,429 and 95 touchdowns in four seasons as Texas Tech's quarterback from 1999 to 2003. His only NFL experience was with the Jets in 2003, when he appeared in one game and completed one of two passes for 17 yards.
Following his playing career, which included stints in NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League, Kingsbury moved into the coaching ranks in college football. He was Houston's offensive coordinator, then held the same position at Texas A&M before landing the top job at Texas Tech.
He has coached quarterbacks Case Keenum, Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield, all of whom have experienced varying levels of success in the NFL.
The Jets fired head coach Todd Bowles on Sunday after the team concluded a 4-12 season. Bowles had a 24-40 mark in four years on the job.
The Cardinals made a coaching change for the second year in a row, axing Steve Wilks on Monday after his lone season produced a league-worst 3-13 mark. Arizona will have the first pick in the April draft.
