UK Sport chief says everything going to plan with a year to go until Olympics

Team GB remain on course for "credible performances" across the board at London 2012, according to UK Sport chief Peter Keen. As host nation, Britain will get the opportunity to enter teams in some of the lesser known events to give them a place on the biggest stage. In their latest 'Mission 2012' update, UK Sport showed some 28 Olympic and Paralympic sports rating the 'climate' within their sport as green, which is the most since the process began in 2008 and six more than in April this year. At the last Olympics in Beijing, Team GB exceeded all hopes when 19 golds helped them finish fourth in the final medal table with a total of 47. However, UK Sport director of performance Keen insists Britain must not become obsessed with holding a podium finish as the sole target for London 2012.

Medals

"There is a quite complete view of what Team GB is about. It is about making sure certain people are the best they can be, Keen said. "This notion of credible performance has been around from the start - it is quite hard to define, but we all know it when we see it. "For me, the stories which will get written post London, regardless of the final medal table, will come down to did an individual or team absolutely land it? Were they the best they could be, did they blow it and fail to see the opportunity? Or is this the first glimpse of what can be in future generations. "If it looks credible, that we were well prepared and knew what we were doing, that is a fantastic story, and will complement around whatever is achieved by medalists at the top of the sport. "For me, overall, the team will be massively credible because of the efforts which have gone in, the journeys which have been planned to date and the inspiration of sport." Hundreds of millions of pounds has been invested into British sport ahead of the London Games, boosted by funding from the National Lottery, the Government Exchequer and private income from Team 2012 partnership.
Targets
Keen will effectively be the man charged with setting medal targets for each individual sport, although there is still plenty of work to be done in the coming months. Of the 28 Olympic sports assessed, 11 were given an overall rating of green, indicating strong all round performance and confidence in success going forward, with the likes of Taekwondo delivering four medals at the recent World Championships in Korea. None had an overall rating of red. UK Sport chief executive Liz Nicholl said: "The current state of play is really positive indeed. "What we are seeing is a general feel good factor in the sports on this journey to 2012 "Sport is on track towards the high-level goal of top four in the Olympics medal table and more medals across more sports. "We are not saying everything is perfect. Sports recognise there are things which need to be worked on, but are confident they know what needs to be done are working on it with our help."
