The women's tournament will kick-off first on July 28th

On Wednesday the London 2012 Olympic Basketball competition schedule was confirmed. The women's tournament in the basketball arena on the Olympic Park will get underway on Saturday 28 July. Amongst the games on the first day, Great Britain will face world number two Australia. On Sunday 29 July, the men's tournament begins, with games including world number one USA beginning the defence of their Olympic title against France.

Qualifying

Both the men's and women's Olympic basketball tournaments will feature 12 teams. For the men's event, nine teams have already qualified for the Games, with the remaining three places to be decided at a qualifying tournament from the 2nd-8th July in Venezuela. There are seven teams who have already qualified for the women's competition. The remaining five places are set to be decided at a qualifying tournament from the 25th June to 1st July in Turkey. Director of Sport at LOCOG, Debbie Jevans, said: "The Olympic Basketball tournament is sure to be one of the big hits of the summer with some of the biggest basketball stars in the world coming to London to compete for gold. "With the competition schedule now confirmed, teams and fans alike can start to get ready for the exciting encounters, world-class players and top teams we'll see in action this summer."
