Former champion qualifies for London 2012 alongside brother

Laure Manaudou booked her second spot at the Olympics with victory in the 200m backstroke at the French trials, and she will be joined by her younger brother Florent in London after he qualified in the 50m freestyle. Manaudou is returning to the Olympics after a break to have a child, but now she will be back in the Olympic pool in two events after fine displays in Dunkirk. After already qualifying in the 100m backstroke, she doubled up in the 200m with a time of 2:08.06 giving her the French title and a place at London 2012. Alexianne Castel also qualified by finishing second in 2:08.57 but the story was a second Olympic place for Manaudou, an Olympic champion from Athens in 2004. "I know what I have to do now and I will have to swim faster if I want to grab an Olympic medal," Laure said. The Manaudou family also has another swimmer involved in London 2012 after Laure's young brother Florent came second in the 50m freestyle to book his place on the team. Laure's boyfriend Frederick Bousquet was also in the race but could only finish fourth, while Olympic 100m freestyle champion Alain Bernard also missed out again. Beijing champion Bernard had already failed to qualify for the 100m free and his failure in the 50m saw him miss out on all the solo events at London 2012. Bernard does have a place in the relay squad but he admitted that was not good enough - although the 28-year-old did receive a standing ovation from the crowd who sensed he could be near the end of his career. "It's the beginning of the end. I worked very hard but I did not swim the way I wanted," said Bernard. "The ovation was beautiful. The competition ruled today, that's what sport is."
