Brown and Turner cannot make the grade in Sheffield

Adam Brown and Grant Turner both missed out on securing Olympic places in the 100 metres freestyle on the final night of the British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield. But Team GB ended the second Olympic trials with seven swimmers added to the London 2012 contingent, which at 44 is the largest Britain have ever sent to a Games. Brown caught Turner in the closing stages to win in 49.16 seconds, outside the FINA 'A' time required for qualification. The duo's woes continued the disappointment in the men's freestyle sprints where, as it stands, there will be no British male presence in either the 50m or 100m. But for British Swimming national performance director Michael Scott there was overall satisfaction at the qualification process. "It's been a continuation of the March trials in London. There have been some really good performances, people have stepped up and met the requirements," he said.

Strongest ever

"We are going to take our strongest and biggest team ever to the Olympic Games. "Building upon London and also building on the work of the last four years so very satisfying from that perspective. "Having the standards we've had in place hasn't lowered the numbers, there has been a 20 per cent increase in the size of the team with what we regarded was a harder selection policy than 2008." Elsewhere on Saturday Aimee Willmott, already assured of a spot, produced a swim of 4 minutes 38.68seconds to win the 400m individual medley, a hugely impressive performance given that she is in heavy training. The Middlesbrough swimmer will swim on the first day of competition alongside world silver medallist Hannah Miley in London, 28 years to the day after her father Stuart competed in the same event at the Los Angeles Olympics. Fellow Olympian and 2011 double world finalist Jemma Lowe won the 200m butterfly and Lucy Ellis took almost exactly three seconds off her best to win the 400m freestyle in 4:09.68. Daniel Fogg and David Davies were second and fifth in the 1,500m freestyle, while Andrew Willis won the 200m breaststroke and Lewis Coleman took the 200m individual medley title.
