Jon Ridgeon tells us about his memories of Atlanta 1996 and his wish for a Olympic triathlon relay event!
Ahead of London 2012 we asked a range of personalities to let us know what the Olympics means to them. Former hurdler Jon Ridgeon, who won the silver medal in the 110 metres hurdles at the 1987 World Championships, tells us what he is looking forward to seeing this summer.
What are your favourite Olympics memories?
A personal favourite moment that sticks out in my mind is not related to my own Olympic performances but instead relates to Michael Johnson at the Atlanta 1996 Games. I had finished my event (400m Hurdles) and had gone down to the Olympic stadium to watch the men's 200m sprint. As darkness fell over the stadium, the home country hero, Johnson, won the event in a new world record. As he ran his phenomenal time to win in his golden running spikes, the entire stadium exploded into a blaze of 80,000 camera flashes, creating an incredible sight and atmosphere.
Who would you class as the greatest Olympian of all time?
Jesse Owens - he combined being a great athlete with huge social impact. Most successful athletes never make that wider impact on the world.
How much of London 2012 will you be watching? Are you going?
As much as possible, both live at the stadiums and on TV when I'm not there. I can't wait!
Which events are you most looking forward to?
Men's 100m - I know it's a predictable answer but the theatre will be great and I believe that Usain Bolt will find it no walk over! Also, any big Gold medal winning British moment.
How do you think Team GB will fare?
Brilliantly well, the GB athletes are ready and with home advantage added, 20 plus Gold medals across the 26 Olympic sports is very realistic. The GB Paralympic team also look like they can build on their second-place finish in the Beijing medals table.
What sport would you like to see added to the Olympics?
None in terms of new sports as three have only recently been added, but I would like to see the triathlon programme expanded to also include a team relay competition.
If you were to enter the Olympics, which event would you choose and why (you cannot choose your own sport!)?
Triathlon, as its three elements provide a fascinating challenge and I complete a couple each year.
