Former Leeds and England outside back Lee Smith has joined Wakefield on a deal until the end of the season.

Smith, who was an integral member of the Wildcats side that reached the Super League play-offs in 2012, returns to Belle Vue after a brief spell in rugby union with Aviva Premiership club Newcastle.

The 28-year-old won three Grand Finals with Leeds in three different positions and played on the wing for England in the 2008 World Cup.

He could be a straight replacement for full-back Kevin Locke if the New Zealand international is ruled out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury sustained in Sunday's 58-20 defeat by Castleford.

Wakefield chairman Michael Carter said: "I'm delighted to welcome a player of Lee's class back to the club. I'm sure he will do well for us until the end of the season."
