Heather Watson and Cameron Norrie suffered tough three-set defeats in the opening round of the Mexican Open.

Watson, who helped Great Britain into the World Group II play-offs, had begun the season well with a run to the semi-finals in Hobart but has since struggled for form on the WTA circuit with early exits at the Australian Open and St Petersburg Ladies' Trophy qualifying lost to Beatriz Haddad Maia in Acapulco.

Watson had never previously met her Brazilian opponent and both players were evenly matched in the early stages before Haddad Maia secured the opener 7-5.

The world No 71 recovered to take the second set 6-4 but was unable to build upon the momentum swing and lost the deciding set 6-1, as the Brazilian world No 60 booked a meeting with second seed Kristina Mladenovic.
