Champion opens title defence with a 'double bagel'

Caroline Wozniacki made the ideal start to the defence of her Pilot Pen title as she crushed Edina Gallovits. The second seed did not give her Romanian rival a chance as she raced to a 6-0 6-0 victory in Connecticut. Fellow seeds Marion Bartoli and Flavia Pennetta also reached the second round - although the duo had contrasting battles. Sixth seed Bartoli had to come back from a set down before seeing off Spaniard Marfa Jose Martinez 4-6 6-3 6-1. Pennetta, seeded third, was simply strong for Romanian Raluca Olaru as she raced to a 6-1 6-2 victory in double quick time. Australian Samantha Stosur needed three sets to edge past Alize Cornet 6-7 (8-10) 6-2 6-4 and into the second round. Anna Chakvetadze, who was beaten by Wozniacki in the 2008 final, is through to third round with a battling 4-6 6-4 7-5 victory over Sybille Bammer. And eighth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo joined the Russian in the third round as she brushed aside Alona Bondarenko 6-1 6-1.
