Belgian fails to take opportunities as she tumbles out in Marbella

Spaniard Beatriz García Vidagany ended Kim Clijsters' hopes of success in the Andalucía Tennis Experience with a shock second-round win. The qualifier recorded a stunning 7-5 4-6 6-4 result in Marbella to send the third seed tumbling out of the tournament. Clijsters had been given a scare in her opening match, needing three sets to see off the challenge of Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru. The Belgian was unable to pull off a similar result for the second successive day, though she did waste several opportunities to take control.

Missed chances

Playing in her first clay event for three years, the world number 10 - who won in Miami last time out - squandered three set points in the opening set. Having levelled matters by taking the second, she then broke serve twice to move ahead in the decider. However Garcia Vidagany produced a spectacular comeback, winning 11 of the last 14 points to seal the biggest win of her career. The left-hander had never before appeared in a main draw on the WTA tour. Clijsters was not the only big name to exit as seventh-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues was beaten 6-1 7-6 by Italian Sara Errani. There were no such problems for the top two seeds, Victoria Azarenka and Flavia Pennetta both cruising into the third round in straight sets. Top seed Azarenka demolished Spain's Estrella Cabeza Candela 6-2 6-4, while second seed Pennetta eased to a 6-2 6-2 result against qualifier Laura Pous Tio, of Spain.
