Vera Zvonareva suffered final heartache for the second time on Saturday when she missed out on the women's doubles title at Wimbledon.
The Russian returned to action on Centre Court just hours after losing 6-3 6-2 to world number one Serena Williams in the women's final.
Zvonareva and playing partner Elena Vesnina were the top seeds for the doubles but were beaten in straight sets by the unseeded pairing of Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova.
Despite playing in just their third tournament together, American King and Shvedova from Kazakhstan took a tight opening set on a tie-break.
The second proved much more one-sided, both Zvonareva and Vesnina losing their serve early on as they slipped 4-1 behind.
King then served for the match to clinch a 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 triumph that created a little piece of history, as Shvedova is now the first Kazakh to win a title of any kind at SW19.
First grand slam
Meanwhile, unseeded pairing Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner won their first grand slam title with a straight-sets victory over Horia Tecau and Robert Lindstedt in the men's doubles final.
Melzer and Petzschner, who won their first title together in Zagreb earlier this year, started fast, winning the first set for the loss of just one game.
The 16th seeds - a Swedish-Romanian partnership - made more of a fight of it in the next two sets before going down 6-1 7-5 7-5.
The Austrian-German champions were unseeded, but defeats for top-ranked pairs Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, and Bob and Mike Bryan earlier in the fortnight left the tournament wide open.
"I think we played really well. We played incredible tennis in the first set," Petzschner said afterwards. "We played one of our best matches out there and deserved the win."
