Wimbledon semi-finalist falls at the first hurdle

Young Czech star Petra Kvitova was brought back to earth with a bump after she suffered a shock exit from the Banka Koper Slovenia Open. The second seed, who reached the semi-final at Wimbledon, came unstuck as she lost 7-5 6-2 to Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele. However while Kvitova fell at the first hurdle, the rest of the leading seeds came through unscathed in Portoroz. Top-ranked Jelena Jankovic brushed aside Serbian youngster Bojana Jovanovski 6-3 6-3, while third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova edged out Alberta Brianti 7-5 6-1. Fourth seed Sara Errani, last year's beaten finalist, saw off qualifier Anna Tatishvili 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 and seventh-seeded Polona Hercog progressed with a 6-3 6-3 win over Elena Bovina. Eighth-ranked Swede Sofia Arvidsson did crash out, though, after compatriot Johanna Larsson recorded a surprise 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 victory.
