Dane sees off two Russians in one day in Canada

Caroline Wozniacki cruised to a 6-3 6-2 victory over Vera Zvonareva to claim her third title of the year at the rain-affected Rogers Cup. With torrential rain over the weekend having seen the tournament fall behind schedule, Wozniacki was forced to play both her semi-final and final on Monday. But she proved ably up to the task and, having disposed of Svetlana Kuznetsova in her semi-final, overpowered Zvonareva to win the tournament in Montreal for the first time. Having picked up her seconc hardcourt title in three weeks, the 20-year-old will now head into the forthcoming US Open as arguably the favourite for the season's final Grand Slam. However, she had little time to savour her success and had to head off shortly after her triumph to New Haven for the Pilot Pen Championship - her final tune-up before the US Open and an event where she is both top seed and defending champion. Having brushed aside Kuznesova 6-2 6-3, Wozniacki was full of confidence as she took on another Russian in the final just two hours later. Zvonareva booked her place in the showdown after Victoria Azarenka retired from their semi-final with blisters while trailing 7-6 1-0.

Took control

The Wimbledon finalist made an encouraging start against Wozniacki as she claimed an early break, but the Dane then swept through the next four to take control. Zvonareva did have the chance to extend the first set as she earned triple-break point as her opponent served a 5-3, but she was not able to press home her advantage and Wozniacki went on to take her first set point. An early break in the second ensured she always held the upper hand and after adding the insurance of another in the seventh game she easily went on to close out the match in just 74 minutes. "After waiting around two days and unable to play I actually felt a little bit tired going out for my first match because mentally you have to be prepared all the time," Wozniacki stated afterwards. "But I'm so happy, I won two matches today and it is a great feeling." Wozniacki, who looks likely to be handed the number one seed at Flushing Meadows after world number one Serena Williams was ruled out through injury, can take over top spot in the world rankings with a successful title defence in New Haven and a victory at the US Open. "Of course I would like to be number one in the world but Serena is a great champion, she's won so many grand slams," she added. "My goal for now is just to try to win a Grand Slam and the number one spot is secondary to that."
