Fourth seed scrapes past Bondarenko in New Haven

Elena Dementieva edged out Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko to reach the quarter-finals of the Pilot Pen Tennis in New Haven. The Russian fourth seed overcame Bondarenko 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 in a tough three set battle at the hardcourt tournament. Dementieva, who will face Marion Bartoli in the last eight, is still building match fitness ahead of the upcoming US Open after tearing a calf muscle at the French Open. Sixth seed Bartoli easily saw off Australian Anastasia Rodionova 6-3 6-1 to cruise into the quarter finals. Top seed Caroline Wozniacki, who was also named top seed for the US Open earlier this week, later progressed with a 6-4 6-1 win against Dominika Cibulkova. Seventh seed Italian Flavia Pennetta eased past Olga Govortsova 6-3 6-2 while Nadia Petrova, seeded eighth, also had little trouble in the second round as she saw off Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3 6-2 to book a quarter-final date with French Open finalist Samantha Stosur. Maria Kirilenko was a 6-3 6-1 winner against Timea Bacsinszky, with wild card Dinara Safina also progressing.
