Serb wins her first WTA title in two years in Linz
Ana Ivanovic has won her first WTA Tour title in two years after comprehensively defeating Patty Schnyder 6-1 6-2 in the final of the Generali Ladies Open in Linz, Austria.
The 22-year-old Serb's last title came at the same event in 2008, the year in which she also won the French Open and spent 12 weeks at the top of the world rankings.
"Winning again after two years is so wonderful, just unbelievable," Ivanovic said. "I have been waiting so long for this and I worked hard to achieve it."
After suffering a loss of form over recent seasons - Sunday's appearance was her first in a final in 19 months - Ivanovic is now ranked 29th in the world.
Initially she had not planned to appear at the indoor event but accepted a late wildcard after Serena Williams pulled out with a foot injury.
Respect
"I felt very well and hit the balls well," said Ivanovic, who did not drop a set in the tournament.
"Patty played well all week so I tried to put her under pressure from the start. That paid off."
Schnyder, who is ranked 47th in the world, was playing her third final in Linz. The Swiss also lost the 2005 and 2007 finals.
"Respect for Ana, there was nothing in it for me," she said. "She took the balls so early and placed them so well, there was just no chance to find for my game."
Ivanovic dominated the match from the start. She was broken once in the first set but won all three of Schnyder's service games.
She then raced to a 5-0 lead in the second set before Schnyder broke her and then held serve for the only time in the match.
After just 45 minutes on court, Ivanovic closed out the win with an ace on her second match point.
