Dane edges into Brussels quarters, but Jankovic crashes out

World number one Caroline Wozniacki once again looked far from convincing as she struggled into the quarter-finals of the Brussels Open. The Danish top-seed looked out-of-sorts as she beat American world number 85 Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 7-6 (7/5). Wozniacki, whose clay-court form this season has been patchy, battled back from a break down in the first set and then squandered her first four match points. She will next face Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer, after the sixth seed defeated 17-year-old qualifier Alison Van Uytvanck 7-6 (7/2) 6-4. Second seed Vera Zvonareva was also unimpressive as she fought back to beat Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva 2-6 6-4 6-3.

Slow start

"It was my first time playing here and I had to get used to the conditions, new court, new balls, new atmosphere," said the Russian number one. "Not only was I a little bit slow at the start but she was playing well. She qualified here so she was used to the conditions. But I found my rhythm and got better as the match went on. Now I have another chance for another match here." Next up for Zvonareva is Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru, who defeated Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-3 6-2. Reigning French Open champion Francesca Schiavone enjoyed much smoother progress with a 6-4 6-4 win over American Irina Falconi. However, fourth-seed Jelena Jankovic was stunned 3-6 6-3 6-3 by Sofia Arvidsson. "Jelena and I have had battles before and I had match points last time, so I really wanted to win this time," Arvidsson said afterwards. "Usually you play the big players on the big courts, but today we were on a smaller court, so maybe that was an advantage for me. Anyway, I'm happy to win today and get my revenge." The Swede next faces Chinese eighth seed Peng Shuai, who eased past Abigail Spears of the United States 6-2 6-0.
