British number two downed in straight sets by Brianti

Anne Keothavong failed to join fellow Britons Elena Baltacha and Heather Watson in the second round of the Citi Open in College Park as she was beaten in straight sets by Italian eighth seed Alberta Brianti. The British number two struggled to control her serve, with her first-serve percentage down at 46% for the match, and she was broken twice on her way to a 6-3 6-4 defeat. Baltacha and Watson both won on Monday to book their places in the second round of the Maryland event. Shahar Peer safely negotiated her opening match against Ryoko Fuda as the top three seeds booked their places in the second round. Top seed Peer of Israel saw of Japanese qualifier Fuda 6-4 6-2 and was joined in the next round by Nadia Petrova and Tamira Paszek, but fourth seed Jelena Dokic was eliminated from the Maryland event.

Struggle

Dokic was way off the pace as she slipped to a 6-3 6-4 loss against China's Zhang Shuai. There were no such problems for second see Petrova, though, as she eased past American qualifier Alexandra Mueller 6-2 6-2. Austrian third seen Paszek had life tougher against another American, Melanie Oudin, who gave her opponent a scare in the second set before slipping to a 7-6 (7/2) 3-6 6-2 loss. Fifth seed Bojana Jovanovski secured a straight-sets victories over Petra Rampre. Other winners included three more Americans - Irina Falconi, Jill Craybas and qualifier Madison Brengle - as well as Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva and 17-year-old Canadian wildcard Eugenie Bouchard.
