Former champion Del Potro too hot for Volandri

The 2009 champion Juan Martin Del Potro made a winning return to the US Open on Wednesday. Del Potro beat Roger Federer to win the title two years ago but missed his title defence last season after undergoing wrist surgery. Wednesday was therefore his first match back at Flushing Meadows since he five-set victory over Federer. And it brought an impressive performance from the Argentine as he dismantled Italy's Filippo Volandri, allowing him just five games. Del Potro got his booming serve working well as he strolled to a 6-3 6-1 6-1 success on the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The 18th seed got 68 per cent of his first serves in, blasted 18 aces and did not allow his bewildered opponent a single break point.

Special

On return Del Potro broke serve seven times as he sealed victory in just 88 minutes. The serve certainly pleased Del Potro who was happy to be back as his "favourite tournament". "To be playing here after winning here, it's special. It's my favorite tournament, so I'm really happy to take the opportunity to play here again. "I think I'm serving much better than two years ago or in the beginning of this year. I know that other players are playing much better than me at this moment, especially the top 10 players. "But I repeat - to be here playing this tournament, for me it's a great signal for my future. I know I'm getting closer to my best level, and that's important."
