Delight for British youngster in New York
Great Britain's Oli Golding won the US Open boys' title with a 5-7 6-3 6-4 victory over world junior number one Jiri Vesely in the final on Sunday.
The 17-year-old from Twickenham is the first British male to win a junior Grand Slam title since Andy Murray beat Sergiy Stakhovsky at Flushing Meadows seven years ago.
Golding lost the opening set and then had to keep his composure after rain halted play at the stat of the final set as he battled his way to victory.
Czech Vesely started the contest as favourite and he showed plenty of promise as he took the opener against his regular doubles partner.
Golding, playing his eighth match in four days, wasn't going to give up easily and he finally enjoyed some joy in the fourth game of the second set when he broke with a backhand pass.
The Brit kept his fans on the edge of their seats when he failed to take four set points but he wasn't to be denied as he set up a decider on his fifth chance.
Decider
Golding wasn't too worried by a rain delay as he struck in the seventh game of the third set, testing Vesely's forehand and then sending home a simple volley on break point.
The 17-year-old sealed victory with a strong backhand and couldn't hide his delight as he enjoyed his New York success.
Golding said: "It's something I have been working for a long time, and it feels unbelievable. I don't have the words.
"I know now I can take a lot of confidence from this, knowing that I've got the level to do this sort of thing, and really just keep working hard. That's the main thing."
He added of his moment of triumph: "I didn't think it was going to be that easy, to be honest.
"I played a really good game. He made a couple of errors at the beginning of the game which helped me out, but I was trying to think, just keep playing the same way you have been playing the whole match and you'll get through it."
