Fifth seed sent crashing out of Japan Open

Australian fifth seed Jarmila Gajdosova suffered a second-round defeat to China's Zheng Jie in an upset at the Japan Open. Gajdosova had lost twice to world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the past month, in the second round of tournaments in Beijing and Tokyo. It was little easier for the world number 30 against Zheng, who posted a 7-5 6-3 victory in under an hour and a half at the event in Osaka. Chinese player Zheng, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, goes on to a quarter-final against Czech player Petra Cetkovska. Cetkovska was a resounding 6-0 6-3 victor over Japan's Erika Sema. German third seed Angelique Kerber also reached the last eight, beating Bulgarian Olga Govortsova 6-1 6-3, and her next opponent will be Tamarine Tanasugarn after the Thai player's 6-2 6-4 win against France's Mathilde Johansson. As well as four second-round matches, an all-American first-round tussle was also contested, with Vania King beating Jill Craybas 6-1 3-6 6-1.
