Del Potro sees off Anderson to reach last eight in Spain

Jo Wilfried-Tsonga's hopes of qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals suffered a blow when he was knocked out in the second round of the Valencia Open. The Frenchman tumbled out at the hands of American Sam Querrey, who won 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 to set up a clash with Juan Martin del Potro in the quarter-finals. Tsonga, currently ranked seventh, could have jumped above the Tomas Berdych in the battle to seal one of the final three places available in the season-ending ATP Tour event in London. The second seed's early departure is good news for del Potro - the Argentine defeated South Africa's Kevin Anderson 6-4 6-4 to keep himself firmly in the running to qualify. Meanwhile, Juan Carlos Ferrero made it through to the last eight with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 6-2 success over Alex Bogomolov Jr in nearly three hours. The win means the former world number one remains on course to play his friend and co-owner of the Valencia event David Ferrer in the semi-finals. Standing next in Ferrero's way is Juan Monaco, the world No.41 having knocked out Italian Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-1. Marcelo Granollers prevailed 3-6 6-3 7-5 against Croat Marin Cilic while Nikolay Davydenko of Russia didn't have to hit a ball to get past Nicolas Mahut, the Frenchman withdrawing from the tournament due to injury.
