Elena Baltacha lost to Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round of the Hobart International, while fellow Brit Heather Watson qualified for the main draw.
Mixed fortunes for Britons in Hobart
Elena Baltacha has been knocked out of the Moorilla International in Hobart, losing in straight sets to Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.
The Briton was beaten 6-2 7-5 by the number eight seed in the opening round of the WTA event.
After being outplayed in the opening set, Baltacha recovered well in the second but failed to make the most of her break-point opportunities.
While Begu converted all three break points that she created, the world number 51 from Ipswich could muster just two from six.
Begu, ranked 11 places above her opponent, clinched victory in 93 minutes and will now face compatriot Simona Halep in round two.
Meanwhile, another Briton - Heather Watson - enjoyed a victory over Germany's Kristina Barrois to qualify for the main draw in Tasmania.
The 19-year-old from Guernsey won 4-6 7-5 7-6 (7/1) having recovered from the sore ankle that forced her to withdraw from the recent tournament in Auckland.
Seeds crash
Seeds Monica Niculescu and Ksenia Pervak were knocked out on the opening day of the tournament.
Romania's Niculescu, seeded third, failed to even get on the board in her first set against Russia's Anna Chakvetadze and, despite an improved showing in the second, crashed to a 6-0 6-4 defeat.
But compatriot Sorana Cirstea dumped out Servak, the seventh seed from Kazakhstan, 6-2 7-6 (8/6) in an hour and 42 minutes to progress.
Australia's Anastasia Rodionova saw off Hungarian Greta Arn 6-4 7-5 while Simona Halep, another of the extensive Romanian contingent on show, came from a set down to beat Czech Klara Zakopalova 4-6 6-2 7-5.
