Matthew Ebden scored an upset in the first round of the ATP Sydney International on Monday when he beat seventh seed Marcel Granollers. The 24-year-old Australian wild card entry, who is ranked 97th in the world, beat the 28th-ranked Spaniard 6-1 3-6 6-3. Also in the first round, American Bobby Reynolds beat Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-5 6-3 while compatriot Ryan Sweeting advanced with a 3-6 7-6 (7/2) 7-5 win over Luxembourg's Gilles Muller. Poland's Lukasz Kubot beat Ivan Dodig of Croatia 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 while Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan beat Spain's Pablo Andujar 6-3 2-6 6-3. Finland's Jarkko Nieminen also progressed after ousting Australian teenager James Duckworth 6-2 6-2.
