French outsider ousts fifth seed in first round of Heineken Open

French qualifier Adrian Mannarino sprung a surprise as he defeated fifth seed Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-3 in the opening round of the Heineken Open in Auckland. Mannarino needed little over an hour to see off his South African opponent, who sits 55 places above him in the world rankings. The 23-year-old set the tone early on as he secured a break in the third game of the first set, with Anderson dropping his serve for a second time in the ninth game. And another break in the sixth game of the second set was enough to send Anderson crashing out of the tournament. Mannarino will meet Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round after the Spaniard fought back from a set down to defeat Russia's Igor Kunitsyn 2-6 6-4 6-2. There was also a setback for Juan Carlos Ferrero as the former world number one was brushed aside 6-3 6-2 by 92nd-ranked Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-3 6-2. Number eight seed Philipp Kohlschreiber also needed three sets to see off the challenge of Swiss qualifier Stephane Bohli, eventually completing a 6-4 4-6 6-4 win. "It was a tough challenge today. But I am happy to get through and I know that each day there is more energy coming back," Kohlschreiber said The German will next play Ryan Harrison, who defeated fellow American Sam Querrey 6-4 6-3 in the first round of the competition.
