American too good for British hopeful

Heather Watson's bid to record a first WTA Tour victory in 2012 ended in disappointment on Tuesday after she was beaten in her opening match at the Pattaya Open. The teenager from Guernsey, who suffered first-round defeats in Hobart and at the Australian Open, was beaten in straight sets by American Vania King. A solitary break was enough to give world number 59 King the first set and two more in the second saw her emerge a 6-4 6-2 victor in one hour and 30 minutes. Laura Robson, who along with Watson played a part in Great Britain advancing into a Fed Cup World Group promotion play-off, was also unable to advance past the first round. Robson was 5-2 down to Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova when she had to withdraw with an apparent back strain. There was better news, however, for Anne Keothavong, who thrashed second seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 6-1. Keothavong claimed the opening set with a single break and then ran through the second to oust the world number 16 in impressive fashion.
