Radek Stepanek suffered a surprise second-round defeat at the hands of Steve Darcis at the SAP Open in San Jose. The number four seed and former champion was fancied to do well at the tournament but his Belgian opponent beat him 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/2). Also going through was the number five seed Julien Benneteau, who got the better of Gilles Muller in two sets 6-2 6-4. Sixth seed Kevin Anderson dropped just three games on his way to beating Matthew Ebden, winning 6-1 6-2, while Dimitar Kutrovsky beat home favourite Blake Strode 7-5 6-3. Ryan Harrison won his all-American clash with Robby Ginepri 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7/0) while Denis Istomin ended the hopes of another home player, Michael Russell, with a 6-2 6-2 win.
