Top seed David Ferrer's excellent start to 2012 continued as he saw off Santiago Gonzalez 6-1 6-2 in the first round of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. The defending champion has only lost one match this year and brushed aside Gonzalez for the loss of just three games in 64 minutes. Second seed Nicolas Almagro found life a little tougher against fellow Spaniard Pere Riba, eventually coming out with a 6-2 3-6 6-2 win. Kei Nishikori was leading 6-2 4-1 when Albert Montanes withdrew while Fernando Verdasco was a straight-sets winner over Filippo Volandri. However there were two upsets as third seed Gilles Simon was beaten 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 by Carlos Berlocq and sixth seed Juan Monaco withdrew suffering heat exhaustion while losing 7-6 (7-2) 5-3 to Albert Ramos. Stanislas Wawrinka and Jeremy Chardy were among the other winners.
