Bizarre incident can't stop Swiss progressing in Miami

Roger Federer will play Andy Roddick in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open after opening his campaign with a straight-sets win. The Swiss great, a winner in Indian Wells last weekend, posted a 6-2 7-6 (7/3) victory over American Ryan Harrison in Miami. The Swiss third seed raced through the opening set, breaking twice and not facing a single break point. When he soon moved a break up in the second set the match looked poised for a swift conclusion but a bizarre game when Federer served for the match let Harrison back in. First Federer missed an overhead to fall into trouble and then when he was two break points down at 15-40 he literally stopped playing after hearing what he felt was a line call. The umpire ruled no such call had been made and Harrison had the break back. However, Federer refocused when the set reached a tie-break to set up his meeting with old rival Roddick. The Swiss told Sky Sports: " I was completely sure it was the linesman (who made the call). "It's one of those things but it felt like I had to win the match three times today." Looking forward to his clash with Roddick, Federer, who feels the courts are playing slightly faster than in Indian Wells and has subsequently raised his racquet tension, added: "It's unusual to see him so early in the tournament but I'm sure it's going to be a great match."

Tricky

Roddick progressed by convincingly beating Gilles Muller, of Luxembourg, 6-3 6-2. Meanwhile, fifth seed David Ferrer put young pretender Bernard Tomic in his place with a straight-sets victory. In what was a potentially tricky opening match of the Miami tournament for Ferrer, the Spanish star triumphed 6-4 6-4 against the 19-year-old. Tomic, who appeared to row with his coach and father John during the match, impressed at January's Australian Open where he made the last 16. Ferrer, twice a semi-finalist at the event, will next meet Julien Benneteau, who beat Benjamin Becker in a final-set tie-break. He is a potential quarter-final opponent for top seed Novak Djokovic, who later overcame Marcos Baghdatis 6-4 6-4. On what was generally a good day for the seeds, Juan Martin Del Potro won a big-serving battle against Ivo Karlovic 7-5 6-4 to progress. He'll next play Marin Cilic. American number one Mardy Fish also put some shaky form to one side to see off Frank Dancevic 6-3 7-6 (7/1). Other seeds to go through included the French pair of Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet, plus the Spainish duo Nicolas Almagro and Fernando Verdasco, who will now meet each other. However, there was disappointment for 15th seed Feliciano Lopez, who lost 6-4 7-6 (7/5) to his fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos. Briton Jamie Murray bowed out at the first hurdle in the doubles event. Playing with Austrian Jurgen Melzer, Murray suffered a 7-5 6-3 defeat to sixth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna.
