Defending champion dumped out at Roland Garros

Defending French Open champion Li Na was sent crashing out of this year's tournament after being beaten 3-6 6-2 6-0 in the fourth round by Yaroslava Shvedova. The Chinese player seemed set for a comfortable enough passage into the quarter-finals as she took the first set with ease against her unseeded opponent. The two then traded breaks of serve twice at the start of the second set before Li suffered a remarkable collapse, losing 10 straight games on Suzanne Lenglen Court. The seventh seed did put up slightly more resistance than the scoreline indicated as several of the games she dropped went to multiple deuces, but a cutting edge was severely lacking amid her 41 unforced errors. "I was nervous in the first set and was making mistakes, but I then tried to attack more," Shvedova said. "I knew she was the defending champion and she had all the pressure. I had come from qualifying, was playing my seventh match and I just told myself to enjoy the day and try and my best." Kazakhstan's Shvedova will face Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the last eight after the Czech player sailed to a 6-2 6-1 in over Varvara Lepchenko. The match was moved from Philippe Chatrier Court to Court One to try and beat the fading light, but Kvitova made any time concerns academic as she completed the win in just one hour.
